SUMMARY:Fall Plant ID Walk at the Ridgewood Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:Join naturalist Caitlin Lynch to observe and learn about plants at the Ridgewood Reservoir. \n\nAbout this event\nDuring this (approx) 1 hour walk\, Caitlin will share with participants common and scientific plant names\, how to identify certain species\, their characteristics\, their family relationships\, their uses (ecological and social) and some botanic terms. The tour will include weedy plants\, herbaceous plants\, flowering plants\, trees\, grasses and common invasives. Participants are encouraged to contribute knowledge\, ask questions and store their observations in their plant ID app of choice. The tour route will include the West Causeway and other park areas. \nAppropriate for all ages and all levels. Event is rain or shine but may be rescheduled in the case of storm conditions. \nCaitlin Lynch is an urban naturalist\, environmental scientist and plant aficionado based in Brooklyn. She has worked with the NYC Parks Department\, Natural Areas Conservancy\, and NYC H20 on a myriad of restoration\, stewardship\, and ecological surveying projects throughout the city. \nNew York City is home to over 1\,300 native plants and many other naturalized species that provide ecosystem services including specialized habitat\, food\, and a host of medical and other uses. The grounds of Ridgewood Reservoir\, located in Highland Park\, have been maintained and managed to restore many of the native plant species to this area. The late summer/early fall is an ideal time for plant ID in the Northeast with its abundance of late blooming flowers\, seed/fruit formations\, and early leaf color changes.

SUMMARY:Brooklyn Book Festival: Festival Day And Literary Marketplace
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Brooklyn Book Festival is committed to presenting a major literary festival\, free-to-the-public\, that reflects the city’s dynamic\, cross-cultural book readers and literary community. When the Festival began in 2006\, we established our credo “hip\, smart\, diverse.” Those words are part of our mission statement and guide us each year in creating a festival that is forward thinking and inclusive. \n*** \n\nSaturday\, September 30\, 10 AM-4 PM: Children’s Day\, Brooklyn Commons at MetroTech \nSunday\, October 1\, 10 AM- PM: Festival Day and Literary Marketplace\, Brooklyn Borough Hall \n*** \n\nCitywide Bookend events will take place in all five boroughs as well as some virtually. These literary themed events are presented in bookstores\, clubs\, libraries\, cultural organizations and performance spaces to collectively create a literary celebration in all five boroughs. This year will again present a Virtual Festival Day to include authors and audiences that cannot attend in person. Children’s Day will celebrate childhood reading as an act of love and a learning adventure – parents and guardians reading to children and children meeting their favorite authors. Families will again enjoy a full day of readings\, workshops\, performances\, book signings\, and art projects with favorite authors and illustrators. \nJoin us this year in person in Downtown Brooklyn or at our Virtual Festival Day online! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Volunteer Landscaping and Cleanup at the Ridgewood Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:Join NYC H2O and the NYC Parks Department as we remove invasive plants and plant native plants in the pollinator garden! \nThe Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is a 50+ acre natural oasis that straddles the border of Brooklyn and Queens. Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water\, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950’s and was decommissioned in the 1980’s. \nSince then\, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin. This fresh water source is critical to migrating birds on the Atlantic Flyway. \nWe will meet in the parking lot on Vermont Place\, Brooklyn\, NY 11207\, across the street from the reservoir.

We will have Spanish translation. \nWith autumn approaching we want to help everyone stay healthy and strong in an optimal environment. It’s time to REimagine a new\, clean\, abundant earth. Every workshop\, information booth\, and activity were designed to be in harmony with REduce\, REuse\, REcycle\, REthink & REimagine. We will provide hands-on education on composting\, 4 medicinal herbs\, explain ways to extend the growing season/use of cover crops\, and end the day with Big Reuse will be onsite to distribute FREE goodies. Itinerary and descriptions below. \n*** \n1:00 pm – 1:45 pm: Composting Carnival Workshop – Learn the basics of composting and the benefits it provides at the “Composting Carnival” workshop. By the end\, you will learn their names\, how they can be used for common symptoms\, what part(s) of the plant to use\, select the best menstruum and how to grow them in your garden/container. \n1:00 pm – 4:00 pm: Season Extension/Cover Crops Information Booth – We will have a booth that will provide information on ways you can extend the growing season and the use of cover crops to improve your soil\, slow erosion\, help control pests and diseases\, increase biodiversity and much more. \nBig Reuse Information Booth – A representative and volunteers will be onsite to answer your composting and NEW composting regulation questions. SUMMARY:Brooklyn Book Festival: Children's Day
DESCRIPTION:The Brooklyn Book Festival is committed to presenting a major literary festival\, free-to-the-public\, that reflects the city’s dynamic\, cross-cultural book readers and literary community.

SUMMARY:NASA's TechRise Student Challenge: Virtual Student Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:NASA Challenges Students to Fly Earth and Space Experiments \nNASA is calling on middle and high school students across the country to submit experiment ideas for a high-altitude balloon or rocket-powered lander test flight that\, if selected as a winner (60 winning teams!) would fly on a NASA-sponsored flight test next summer! The TechRise Student Challenge\, in its third year\, gives students across the country hands-on insight into the payload design and flight test process\, with the goal of inspiring a deeper understanding of space exploration\, Earth observation\, coding\, electronics\, and the value of test data. \n\n\n\nNASA encourages students and their instructors to submit experiment ideas even if they have no prior experience with these activities. A wide variety of resources are available to support teams through the submission process\, including two upcoming virtual educator workshops (details below) and a virtual field trip for students (Sep. 29). Winning teams\, announced in January\, will receive technical support and mentorship from Future Engineers\, who will help students learn the skills they need to turn their experiment idea into reality. They will also receive $1\,500 to build their experiment and a 3D printed flight box in which to build it.\n\n\n\nImportant Dates:\n\n· Aug. 31st: Virtual Educator Workshop #1 RSVP HERE\n· September 14th: Virtual Educator Workshop #2 RSVP HERE\n· September 29th: Virtual student field trip RSVP HERE\n· October 20th: Experiments submissions due\n\n\n\n\nAll TechRise Student Challenge info + submission guidelines can be found here: https://www.futureengineers.org/nasatechrise.
