SUMMARY:North Brooklyn Community Boathouse Public Paddle
DESCRIPTION:No matter where you live\, NBCB is your community boathouse! \nThe Public Paddle Series lets us do what we do best: fulfill our mission to enable access to the waterways of New York City for our local community. \nOur Public Paddles occur during our regular season (June-Sept)\, and happen twice a month\, alternating between our 29-foot Langley canoes\, and our fleet of sit-on-top kayaks. Trained ACA trip leaders will guide participants down Newtown Creek\, and often out toward the East River. There’s an opportunity to pause to take photos\, and enjoy the views of Manhattan\, Brooklyn and Queens. These trips run between 20-30 minutes throughout the day. \nPaddling is free! Our public paddles are child friendly\, but there is a minimum height requirement of 4’10” on kayak trips in order to ensure the boat will remain balanced. \nCanoe Public Paddles take place at Manhattan Avenue Street End Park\, while Kayak Public Paddles take place across the creek at Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center. \nIt is recommended to check the NBCB website and social media accounts in the morning in case of an inclement weather cancelation. \nPublic paddles are free and open to everyone. We welcome all our neighbors and members of other community organizations. Together\, let’s learn more about Greenpoint’s history\, environmental challenges and successes\, and residents. DESCRIPTION:Join Newtown Creek Alliance and Trees New York for an East Williamsburg rain garden maintenance walk in the North Brooklyn Industrial Business Zone (IBZ)! \nMeetup Location: \nWe will meet at the Ten Eyck Playground. \nThis event will include: \nA short <1 mile walk to care for the rain gardens in East Williamsburg. Trees New York Environmental Educator\, Sarah Balistreri\, will discuss tree species in the NYC rain gardens and their health. Sarah will also conduct a small pruning demonstration to show the benefits of proper care for street trees by licensed Citizen Pruners. NCA’s horticulturist\, Brenda Suchilt\, and Greenspace Steward\, Gus Perry\, will discuss rain gardens’ role in stormwater management and biodiversity. \nActivities will include removing trash and invasive weeds\, as well as planting native perennials from the Newtown Native Nursery. \nPlan ahead for the event: \nPlease wear comfortable closed-toe walking shoes\, a refillable water bottle\, and weather-appropriate clothing (including sun protection). We will provide cold water\, light snacks\, gloves\, vests\, and tools. Note: there are restrooms on site of the Ten Eyck Playground. If you are unable to attend\, we kindly request you release your spot at least one day in advance. Before the event\, registrants are required to complete a liability waiver and photo consent form. \nThis event is run in partnership with Trees New York\, Evergreen Exchange\, and the offices of Senator Julia Salazar and Council member Jennifer Gutierrez. \nA special thank you to The Hudson River Foundation and the New York-New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program for funding these events.

DESCRIPTION:These outings will start at The Audubon Center at the Boathouse. \nLeader: A member of the Brooklyn Bird Club \nWhether you’re just starting out or have already joined the birding ranks\, this introductory bird outing is for you. Join a member of the Brooklyn Bird Club to learn the basics of birding and search for the dozens of species that visit Prospect Park through all seasons. \nAll levels and ages are welcome. No registration necessary. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. \nPlease bring binoculars if you have them. A limited number of binoculars will be available to loan. \nRoute Description: This outing is at a leisurely pace with lots of stops to observe birds. A different route through the park may be taken each week. There may be steps\, slight inclines\, and grass and dirt paths with exposed roots. We will cover approximately 1.5-2 miles.
