DESCRIPTION: #HEYNBK Want to get your hands in the dirt? \nJoin the Garden Club this season!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nNorth Brooklyn Parks Alliance is excited to offer three volunteer opportunities each month in these distinct parks: \n– Bushwick Inlet Park (50 Kent Ave between 11th and 12th St): a waterfront park defined by its Manhattan views and abundance of flowering pollinator plants. \n– Under the K Bridge Park (Meeker Ave and Van Dam Street): a unique 7-acre park under the BQE\, where you’ll tend to the native plant nursery\, our ecological lab for cultivating biodiversity amongst heavy industry. \n– McGolrick Park (Nassau Ave between Russell and Monitor Streets): an Olmsted-era neighborhood park with a stunning mature tree canopy. \nYou’ll work with our horticultural experts to learn about the ecological needs of each space: weeding invasive plant species\, propagating and transplanting native plants\, amending soil\, and caring for trees. \nEvents are free\, but please consider making a small donation or join our sustaining membership drive and help us build a green fund for North Brooklyn! \n  \n\n\nNOVEMBER 2025 \n\n\n\n11/09/2025\, 10 AM ~ Bushwick Inlet Park (50 Kent) \n\n\n\n11/16/2025\, 10 AM ~ Under the K Bridge Park \n11/23/2025\, 10 AM ~ McGolrick Park \n\nOCTOBER 2025  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10/12/2025\, 10 AM ~ Bushwick Inlet Park (50 Kent) \n10/19/2025\, 10 AM ~ Under the K Bridge Park \n10/26/2025\, 10 AM ~ McGolrick Park \n\nSEPTEMBER 2025  \n9/14/2025\, 10 AM ~ Bushwick Inlet Park (50 Kent) \n9/21/2025\, 10 AM ~ Under the K Bridge Park \n9/28/2025\, 10 AM ~ McGolrick Park \n\n\nAUGUST 2025 \n8/10/2025\, 10 AM ~ Bushwick Inlet Park (50 Kent) \n8/17/2025\, 10 AM ~ Under the K Bridge Park \n8/24/2025\, 10 AM ~ McGolrick Park \n\nJULY 2025  \n7/13/2025\, 10 AM ~ Bushwick Inlet Park (50 Kent) \n7/20/2025\, 10 AM ~ Under the K Bridge Park \n7/27/2025\, 10 AM ~ McGolrick Park \n\nJUNE 2025  \n6/08/25\, 10 AM ~ Bushwick Inlet Park (50 Kent) \n6/15/25\, 10 AM ~ Under the K Bridge Park \n6/22/25\, 10 AM ~ McGolrick Park \n\nMAY 2025  \n5/11/25\, 10 AM ~ Bushwick Inlet Park (50 Kent) \n5/18/25\, 10 AM ~ Under the K Bridge Park \n5/25/25\, 10 AM ~ McGolrick Park \n\nAPRIL 2025  \n4/20/25\, 10 AM ~ Under the K Bridge Park – Seed Ball Workshop \n4/27/25\, 10 AM ~ McGolrick Park

SUMMARY:Echoes of the Earth: Poetry And Movement in Green Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Discover how storytelling and nature come together in this workshop at Escape to Nature! This week\, we’ll explore the theatrical magic of “Pirates! The Penzance Musical”\, a story of adventure\, freedom\, and the unexpected wonders of the world. Just as gardeners work with the unpredictable forces of nature\, actors bring stories to life with movement\, rhythm\, and improvisation. \nThrough performance\, we’ll draw connections between the themes of the play and the cycles of growth\, exploration\, and resilience found in the garden. Using natural and found materials like leaves\, twigs\, and stones\, we’ll craft poetry and reimagine scenes\, giving them new life through a gardener’s perspective. \nWhat we’ll do:\n– Express creativity through movement inspired by nature’s rhythms.\n– Use found objects to create poetry and visual storytelling.\n– Reimagine scenes from Pirates! with themes of discovery\, transformation\, and the wild beauty of the natural world. \nNo theater experience is needed—just an open mind\, a willingness to play\, and a love for nature!

SUMMARY:Climate and Your Closet: Getting Dressed without Overheating the Planet
DESCRIPTION:How do our wardrobes affect the health of our world? How can we create a climate-friendly\, worker-friendly clothing industry? \nJoin Rachel Ceruti\, community director of FabScrap\, and Sammy Cousino\, a community organizer with ReMake\, to understand clothing’s contribution to the climate crisis and learn how we can refashion fashion. \n  \nApparel accounts for about 10% of global carbon emissions—more than international flights and maritime shipping combined. Inexpensive clothing\, marketed as nearly disposable\, has warped our understanding of the true cost of textiles — for our planet and the people who make them. \n  \nClothing is a source of human comfort\, protection\, and expression. But making much of our clothing involves greenhouse gas emissions\, pesticides\, petrochemical production\, soil degradation\, landfill waste\, microplastics\, waterway pollution\, animal cruelty\, and toxic chemicals. To add insult to injury\, the workers who make our clothes often don’t earn enough to live on\, yet they are disproportionately affected by industrial pollution and climate change. \n  \nThere are better ways to make\, care for\, and adapt the clothes we need and want. Join us on May 14 to learn what we can do to remake this essential industry. \n\nRachel Ceruti recently merged her community-based circular fashion business\, Reclypt\, with FABSCRAP\, now acting as Community Director. Rachel is an award-winning leader with a global perspective\, leveraging her experience in the Peace Corps and sustainable finance\, to become a key player in the circular fashion space in New York City. Fueled by her passion for waste reduction and exceptional community building skills\, she has a proven track record of engaging diverse peoples in the mission of waste reduction through community action\, volunteerism\, and education. \n  \nSammy Cousino is a NYC Community Organizer for the nonprofit Remake\, which unites changemakers in the fight for human rights and climate justice in the clothing industry. She is currently pursuing her Master’s in Sustainability Management and brings a policy-informed\, people-centered approach to systems change. \n\n350Brooklyn is a volunteer-driven group that mobilizes people to take effective local action to address the climate crisis. We are committed to pursuing solutions that both reduce climate pollution and ensure that low-income New Yorkers and environmental justice communities participate fully in the benefits the shift to renewable energy will bring. \n

SUMMARY:Columbus Park Reimagined: a Community-Driven Mission
DESCRIPTION:As part of the NYCxDesign Festival\, Downtown Brooklyn Partnership (DBP) is hosting a public presentation and discussion at Brooklyn Borough Hall to showcase the transformative vision for Columbus Park. \nThis event will highlight the collaborative process steered by WXY Studio\, Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA)\, and DBP in reimagining this vital public space. The event will take place in the beautiful Rotunda of Brooklyn Borough Hall\, overlooking Columbus Park. The model that was the culmination of the visioning process will be on display\, and snacks and beverages will be offered. \nIn 2024\, DBP working closely with Brooklyn Borough President Reynoso and Councilmember Lincoln Restler\, embarked upon a study of Columbus Park; eight acres of city-owned open space at the juncture of Downtown Brooklyn and Brooklyn Heights. The park has been sadly underutilized for decades\, but has great potential to provide essential amenities and open space to the growing population of residents\, workers\, and visitors. \nEngaging WXY Studio to study the area\, the group convened a series of meetings with key stakeholders and city agencies and held a very well-attended public meeting\, at which attendees gave valuable feedback and expressed their priorities for the Park.
