DESCRIPTION:Join Newtown Creek Alliance and Trees New York for an East Williamsburg rain garden maintenance walk in the North Brooklyn Industrial Business Zone (IBZ)! \nMeetup Location: \nWe will meet at the Ten Eyck Playground. \nThis event will include: \nA short <1 mile walk to care for the rain gardens in East Williamsburg. Trees New York Environmental Educator\, Sarah Balistreri\, will discuss tree species in the NYC rain gardens and their health. Sarah will also conduct a small pruning demonstration to show the benefits of proper care for street trees by licensed Citizen Pruners. NCA’s horticulturist\, Brenda Suchilt\, and Greenspace Steward\, Gus Perry\, will discuss rain gardens’ role in stormwater management and biodiversity. \nActivities will include removing trash and invasive weeds\, as well as planting native perennials from the Newtown Native Nursery. \nPlan ahead for the event: \nPlease wear comfortable closed-toe walking shoes\, a refillable water bottle\, and weather-appropriate clothing (including sun protection). We will provide cold water\, light snacks\, gloves\, vests\, and tools. Note: there are restrooms on site of the Ten Eyck Playground. If you are unable to attend\, we kindly request you release your spot at least one day in advance. Before the event\, registrants are required to complete a liability waiver and photo consent form. \nThis event is run in partnership with Trees New York\, Evergreen Exchange\, and the offices of Senator Julia Salazar and Council member Jennifer Gutierrez. \nA special thank you to The Hudson River Foundation and the New York-New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program for funding these events.

SUMMARY:North Brooklyn Community Boathouse Public Paddle
DESCRIPTION:No matter where you live\, NBCB is your community boathouse! \nThe Public Paddle Series lets us do what we do best: fulfill our mission to enable access to the waterways of New York City for our local community. \nOur Public Paddles occur during our regular season (June-Sept)\, and happen twice a month\, alternating between our 29-foot Langley canoes\, and our fleet of sit-on-top kayaks. Trained ACA trip leaders will guide participants down Newtown Creek\, and often out toward the East River. There’s an opportunity to pause to take photos\, and enjoy the views of Manhattan\, Brooklyn and Queens. These trips run between 20-30 minutes throughout the day. \nPaddling is free! Our public paddles are child friendly\, but there is a minimum height requirement of 4’10” on kayak trips in order to ensure the boat will remain balanced. \nCanoe Public Paddles take place at Manhattan Avenue Street End Park\, while Kayak Public Paddles take place across the creek at Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center. \nIt is recommended to check the NBCB website and social media accounts in the morning in case of an inclement weather cancelation. \nPublic paddles are free and open to everyone. We welcome all our neighbors and members of other community organizations. Together\, let’s learn more about Greenpoint’s history\, environmental challenges and successes\, and residents. DESCRIPTION:The Walt Whitman Initiative’s annual “Song of Myself” Marathon is an open public reading of Walt Whitman’s celebrated poem. \nReaders volunteer to recite the 52 sections of “Song of Myself”\, often personalizing their reading with an interpretation through song\, dance\, translation into different languages\, musical accompaniment\, or other original means. If interested\, check back for registration! \nThe 52 sections are performed sequentially without an intermission. Audience attendees are invited to sit on the Granite Prospect steps facing readers\, while enjoying views of Manhattan Bridge\, the Brooklyn Bridge and East River. \nThe podium has a microphone that is connected to two speakers to amplify the recitations. A limited number of chairs will be available for those for whom sitting on the steps is difficult or uncomfortable. \nWalt Whitman lovers may also want to join the day before for the Walt Whitman Walking Tour on Saturday\, September 14!

DESCRIPTION:EPA issued a proposed cleanup plan to on Wednesday\, August 28th\, 2024to address contamination related to the Newtown Creek Superfund site in the East Branch portion of the creek in Brooklyn and Queens\, New York. DESCRIPTION:Returning for its 10th season\, University Open Air (UOA) will be held in the grounds around the Prospect Park Boathouse from September 19th – 29th\, 2024. Please see the full schedule below. Registration is not required\, but it allows teacher to better prepare for their classes. \nAs it always does\, UOA provides immigrant teachers\, professors\, and academics\, who were trained outside of the U.S.\, an opportunity to share their knowledge with the public by welcoming students to enjoy free classes in collaboration with the Prospect Park Alliance.
