SUMMARY:Watercolor Winter Birds (Bushwick Inlet Park)
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the Bushwick Inlet Park Community Center for an afternoon of drawing and painting with watercolors.\nRequired registration. \nSome birds live in New York City year-round while others migrate here just for the winter. Join Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park in the Park community center for a relaxed\, adult-focused program that blends fascinating bird science with an encouraging\, hands-on drawing & watercolor lesson. \nThis class will cover the basics of observing and drawing birds and how to transform sketches into a finished watercolor painting. Through a series of short\, follow-along demonstrations\, skills will be introduced which are useful for sketching from nature\, keeping a nature journal\, or beginning a more in-depth watercolor practice focused on birds. \nScientific illustrator Monica Schroeder will guide you through: \n\nSketching birds in multiple positions\nA brief\, artist-friendly overview of bird anatomy\nWatercolor fundamentals and brush techniques\nUsing color (instead of black) to create light and shadow\nThe “mother color” technique for a more natural\, cohesive look\nAfter the guided lesson\, there will be time to work on your own individual project with personalized support.\n\nAdults and teens (accompanied by an adult) are welcome. \nAll materials are provided\, though participants are welcome to bring their own supplies if preferred. \nMaterials include: \n\nWatercolor paints\, palettes\, and brushes\nWatercolor and/or mixed-media paper\nDrawing tools\nSome printed reference materials will be provided or bring your own pictures to paint if desired. Imaginary birds welcome also!

SUMMARY:CBH Talk | Photographer Jamel Shabazz on Prospect Park: A Brooklyn Oasis
DESCRIPTION:Renowned photographer Jamel Shabazz returns to the borough that has shaped his life and art with his most recent book\, Prospect Park: Photographs of a Brooklyn Oasis\, 1980 to 2025. This expansive\, meditative volume captures the heart and soul of Brooklyn through one of its most beloved communal spaces. Join Shabazz as he shares a wide selection of images and reflects on their stories in a conversation led by photographer\, curator\, and writer Laylah Amatullah Barrayn. \nLong before he became celebrated for his street photography\, Shabazz served in the U.S. military and later as a corrections officer for twenty years. Prospect Park offered refuge from the pressures of those environments—a place to find balance\, community\, and inner peace. His book’s introduction\, “My Oasis in Brooklyn\,” speaks to the grounding role the park has played in his life. Since 1980\, he has returned again and again with his camera\, documenting the park’s vibrant pulse. \nThe collection features his signature portraiture of Brooklynites—Afro-Caribbean percussionists at Drummers Grove\, dog walkers and chess players\, elders gathered on benches\, and families savoring quiet moments together. Paired with these intimate encounters are lyrical landscape views that reveal the park’s lesser-seen calm and natural beauty. \nTogether\, these photographs illuminate Prospect Park as both a bustling cultural crossroads and a tranquil sanctuary. In revealing a profoundly personal dimension of Shabazz’s practice\, the book offers a compelling testament to resilience\, fellowship\, and the power of shared public space in the life of a city.

SUMMARY:Prospect Park Guided Walk: Winter Birds
DESCRIPTION:Prospect Park is home to many bird species during the winter months; spend some time observing them on this guided walk.\n\n\n\nJoin LES Ecology Center and Elijah Shiffer for a guided walk at Prospect Park\, taking some time to observe the birds found there during winter. \nThe spring and fall migrations get more attention\, but winter is still an exciting time for birdwatching in New York City. Prospect Park is a great place to look for hardy resident and winter visitor species. The feeders here are well-maintained and attract quite a variety of songbirds; here we’ll keep an eye out for migrant finches and sparrows as well as the elusive Rusty Blackbird and Orange-crowned Warbler. We’ll then walk around the lake\, where winter is the best time for many ducks and other waterbirds. On the lake there’s always the possibility of finding rarities that usually winter in tidal marshes or coastal waters – including sea ducks\, grebes\, and even loons\, and in the mixed flocks of gulls we may even be able to pick out wanderers from the far north such as Iceland Gull or Black-headed Gull. \n\nSign up here.
