We will present practical ways in which “waste” can be viewed (REthink) as a resource that can be REused and reintegrated (REimagined). Let’s do it!!!!! We will have Spanish translation. \nWith autumn approaching we want to help everyone stay healthy and strong in an optimal environment. It’s time to REimagine a new\, clean\, abundant earth. Every workshop\, information booth\, and activity were designed to be in harmony with REduce\, REuse\, REcycle\, REthink & REimagine. We will provide hands-on education on composting\, 4 medicinal herbs\, explain ways to extend the growing season/use of cover crops\, and end the day with Big Reuse will be onsite to distribute FREE goodies. Itinerary and descriptions below. \n*** \n1:00 pm – 1:45 pm: Composting Carnival Workshop – Learn the basics of composting and the benefits it provides at the “Composting Carnival” workshop. The focus will be on 4 herbs – Lobelia\, Mullein\, Echinacea and Marshmallow Root. These herbs are often classified as “respiratory herbs” but they do much more than support one system. This will be an experiential and interactive workshop where you will be able to sample the herbs\, and even collect seeds from the plant/flower. By the end\, you will learn their names\, how they can be used for common symptoms\, what part(s) of the plant to use\, select the best menstruum and how to grow them in your garden/container. \n1:00 pm – 4:00 pm: Season Extension/Cover Crops Information Booth – We will have a booth that will provide information on ways you can extend the growing season and the use of cover crops to improve your soil\, slow erosion\, help control pests and diseases\, increase biodiversity and much more. \nBig Reuse Information Booth – A representative and volunteers will be onsite to answer your composting and NEW composting regulation questions. SUMMARY:Brooklyn Book Festival: Children's Day
DESCRIPTION:The Brooklyn Book Festival is committed to presenting a major literary festival\, free-to-the-public\, that reflects the city’s dynamic\, cross-cultural book readers and literary community. When the Festival began in 2006\, we established our credo “hip\, smart\, diverse.” Those words are part of our mission statement and guide us each year in creating a festival that is forward thinking and inclusive. \n*** \n\nSaturday\, September 30\, 10 AM-4 PM: Children’s Day\, Brooklyn Commons at MetroTech \nSunday\, October 1\, 10 AM- PM: Festival Day and Literary Marketplace\, Brooklyn Borough Hall \n*** \n\nCitywide Bookend events will take place in all five boroughs as well as some virtually. These literary themed events are presented in bookstores\, clubs\, libraries\, cultural organizations and performance spaces to collectively create a literary celebration in all five boroughs. This year will again present a Virtual Festival Day to include authors and audiences that cannot attend in person. Children’s Day will celebrate childhood reading as an act of love and a learning adventure – parents and guardians reading to children and children meeting their favorite authors. Families will again enjoy a full day of readings\, workshops\, performances\, book signings\, and art projects with favorite authors and illustrators. \nJoin us this year in person in Downtown Brooklyn or at our Virtual Festival Day online!

SUMMARY:NASA's TechRise Student Challenge: Virtual Student Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:NASA Challenges Students to Fly Earth and Space Experiments \nNASA is calling on middle and high school students across the country to submit experiment ideas for a high-altitude balloon or rocket-powered lander test flight that\, if selected as a winner (60 winning teams!) would fly on a NASA-sponsored flight test next summer! The TechRise Student Challenge\, in its third year\, gives students across the country hands-on insight into the payload design and flight test process\, with the goal of inspiring a deeper understanding of space exploration\, Earth observation\, coding\, electronics\, and the value of test data. \n\n\n\nNASA encourages students and their instructors to submit experiment ideas even if they have no prior experience with these activities. A wide variety of resources are available to support teams through the submission process\, including two upcoming virtual educator workshops (details below) and a virtual field trip for students (Sep. 29). Winning teams\, announced in January\, will receive technical support and mentorship from Future Engineers\, who will help students learn the skills they need to turn their experiment idea into reality. They will also receive $1\,500 to build their experiment and a 3D printed flight box in which to build it.\n\n\n\nImportant Dates:\n\n· Aug. 31st: Virtual Educator Workshop #1 RSVP HERE\n· September 14th: Virtual Educator Workshop #2 RSVP HERE\n· September 29th: Virtual student field trip RSVP HERE\n· October 20th: Experiments submissions due\n\n\n\n\nAll TechRise Student Challenge info + submission guidelines can be found here: https://www.futureengineers.org/nasatechrise. SUMMARY:Nature and Urbanism (Domino Park)
DESCRIPTION:Professor Lauren Hudson will lead a 3-part lecture series on public urban spaces & how they shape society. \n*** \nDomino Park is proud to present a 3-part lecture series examining equity\, diversity\, & access in public spaces with urbanist & professor Lauren Hudson. Here at the park\, we think public spaces can be spaces for engagement\, continued education\, and discussion; “Nature & Urbanism” is part of an initiative to introduce more programming that helps adults learn & grow beyond the classroom. \n  \nCities have never been neutral spaces. They are in constant flux and the very embodiment of politics in action. While we’re used to seeing cities as sites of resistance and revolutionary possibility (e.g. Stonewall\, Black Lives Matter\, Anti-War protests)\, we tend to overlook the politics of the built environment itself. \nWhat makes a space natural or unnatural? And how do you know nature when you see it? These three talks will cover how we’ve created a specter called ‘nature’\, and how that creation determines who gets to use\, rest\, and belong in our cities and our public places. \n  \nMeet in the seating area next to the Fog Bridge (pier reveal). \nPresented in partnership with Think Olio: https://www.olio.rsvp/
