SUMMARY:Tree Care And Pruning (PS 4 Paradise Garden)
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will learn the basic biology of pruning\, including stem structure\, vascular tissue\, and the CODIT (Compartmentalization of Decay In Trees) theory. They will explore the functions of pruning and the primary types of cuts\, including thinning\, reduction\, and heading cuts. The workshop will also cover healthy and unhealthy tree structures. Participants will be introduced to the standard three-cut pruning method and the basic tools for small-scale pruning\, including hand pruners\, hand saws\, and pole saws. Additionally\, the workshop will discuss best practices for tree care during the dormant winter months\, including pruning\, mulching\, removing invasive or problematic plants\, and inspecting for major defects or diseases. \nNYC Parks GreenThumb hosts this event. We are proud to be the nation’s most extensive urban community gardening program\, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. The Pier and beach remain a hotspot for fishing\, paddling and picnics. Located within the Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area\, Canarsie Beach and salt marsh also remain hotspots for marine wildlife and birds. \nThe cleanup will run from 10am to 12:00pm. DESCRIPTION:Town Square’s popular Greencycle “Post-Holiday” Swap is Saturday\, January 10th ~ just in time for you to clear out the old to make room for the new! Or quietly give away those “unexpected” gifts. \nJoin us to recycle\, reuse and reduce! Drop off your cleaned and useable CLOTHES\, SHOES\, BOOKS\, & TOYS – and browse the selection. Every Greencycle Swap saves +1\,500 pounds of perfectly good stuff from our landfills! \n  \nSIMPLE RULES: \n• RSVP here: bit.ly/Greencycle-Swap \n• ONLY cleaned\, gently used\, working and useable items please. \n• NO need to bring things to take things. \n• ONLY clothes\, shoes\, books\, toys\, household items & electronics. \n• We will NOT ACCEPT baby gear\, furniture\, etc. \n• Out of consideration for others\, we may limit folks to 1 bag or the number of bags that you’ve brought to donate to the swap. \n• We do NOT allow taking donated items to resell. Why? Because all remaining items are donated to local homeless shelters and other non-profits to help neighbors truly in need. \nSuggested donation: $10 a family to help cover costs and support local Scouts. All are welcome\, no prior knowledge or expertise required. \nWhat is the Meeker Avenue Plume?\nThe EPA has listed the Meeker Avenue Plume as a Superfund site\, meaning it is a heavily contaminated area slated for cleanup. With programs led by our Urban Park Rangers\, kids will get to experience nature in a hands-on and fun way.
