SUMMARY:Greenhouse Gang (Kingsland Wildflowers)
DESCRIPTION:Join Newtown Creek Alliance as we work in up-potting\, weeding\, and nursery maintenance in our Newtown Native Greenhouse and Nursery! \n\n\n\n\nGreenhouse Gang is back! Join us May 5th as we kick off Spring with our first hands-on event! \nNCA welcomes volunteers and horticulture enthusiasts to help us expand our native nursery\, propagated from locally collected wild seed. Plants grown in our greenhouse are used to supplement our restoration projects around the Creek\, maintain the rooftop meadows at Kingsland Wildflowers\, and integrated into our Newtown Native Nursery. This is an ideal opportunity for those looking to support an attractive habitat for our local ecology. \nOur horticulturist Brenda Suchilt will be on site to help guide activities such as up-potting and plant maintenance\, as well as answer any questions you may have. \nFollowing our kick-off event\, the series will then run every third Tuesday of the month throughout the growing season. When selecting a ticket type\, please register for a specific date to volunteer with the Greenhouse Gang you are expected to join. \nBefore the event\, registrants are required to complete a liability waiver and photo consent form (Adult form here and Minor form here).

SUMMARY:Bird Watching/ Observación de Aves at Ridgewood Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled from May 24\, 2026\nJoin author and naturalist Heather Wolf for a bird walk at the Ridgewood Reservoir. With the weather turning it’s a great time to come out and enjoy the reservoir and see some birds! 🐦🕊️ \nThe Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is a 50+ acre natural oasis that straddles the border of Brooklyn and Queens. Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water\, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950’s and was decommissioned in the 1980’s. \nSince then\, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin. This fresh water source is critical to migrating birds on the Atlantic Flyway. \nWe will meet in the parking lot on 58-2 Vermont Place\, Brooklyn\, NY 11207\, across the street from the reservoir. \nThis event will be in both spanish and english. \n\n\n.

SUMMARY:2026 Trucks of Art
DESCRIPTION:Trucks of Art returns in 2026. \nVotes have been cast and the artists have been selected\, but we’re keeping the results under wraps until the big reveal.\nThis citywide public art initiative\, led by the NYC Department of Sanitation in partnership with the Sanitation Foundation\, invited independent artists to transform active DSNY sanitation trucks into bold\, moving works of art seen daily across New York City. \nUsing zero-waste materials including reclaimed paint collected at DSNY Special Waste Drop-Off Sites and SAFE Disposal Events artists have reimagined nearly 400 square feet of moving canvas\, turning essential sanitation trucks into vibrant symbols of creativity\, sustainability\, and NYC pride. \nEach design celebrates the work of keeping New York City clean while highlighting sustainability\, waste reduction\, and the essential DSNY workforce. \nThe Reveal\nJoin us May 19\, 2026 in Union Square for a free\, family-friendly unveiling event where the newly transformed Trucks of Art will make their public debut.\nBe the first to see the artists and their designs before they begin rolling through neighborhoods across all five boroughs. SUMMARY:Newtown Creek Nature Walk Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Join Newtown Creek Alliance for a stewardship and planting event at one of our favorite waterfront parks in Greenpoint! \n\n\n\n\nNewtown Creek Alliance and DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) invites you to join us at Newtown Creek Nature Walk Phase 3 for a clean up + planting volunteer event! This is a perfect opportunity to connect with DEP’s community coordinators with any questions you may have for caring of Rain Gardens in your neighborhood. \nThe Nature Walk waterfront marks a milestone in the community to access our long neglected Newtown Creek. The first phase was finished in 2007; the second and third phases were opened in 2021. Upgrades to the nearby Newtown Creek Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility provided funding for this project via the Percent for Art program. Designed by George Trakas\, the Nature Walk provides visitors with opportunities to engage with the deep history\, geology\, ecology and environmental issues of Newtown Creek.
