SUMMARY:Tree Care And Pruning (PS 4 Paradise Garden)
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will learn the basic biology of pruning\, including stem structure\, vascular tissue\, and the CODIT (Compartmentalization of Decay In Trees) theory. They will explore the functions of pruning and the primary types of cuts\, including thinning\, reduction\, and heading cuts. The workshop will also cover healthy and unhealthy tree structures. Participants will be introduced to the standard three-cut pruning method and the basic tools for small-scale pruning\, including hand pruners\, hand saws\, and pole saws. Additionally\, the workshop will discuss best practices for tree care during the dormant winter months\, including pruning\, mulching\, removing invasive or problematic plants\, and inspecting for major defects or diseases. \nNYC Parks GreenThumb hosts this event. We are proud to be the nation’s most extensive urban community gardening program\, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. DESCRIPTION:Come join us for Open Hours at Kingsland Wildflowers — learn about the green roofs and native plants while enjoying a scenic view! \n\n\n\n\nOpen Hours at Kingsland Wildflowers — an opportunity for the public to learn about the green roofs\, the native plants present\, and the Newtown Creek while enjoying the golden hour from our scenic wildflower meadows. Open hours are free and open to the public and will take place every Friday from April 24 to June 26\, 2026\, weather-permitting. \nFor the 2026 Open Hours season\, our Newtown Native Nursery will be open\, allowing visitors to explore (and purchase) native plants that we grow on site\, which can be a great addition for any greenspace you may have or be involved in! \nThis is a family friendly event\, kindly keep in mind that we use our green roofs as an educational resource\, we prefer that furry friends stay at home. NCA staff will be on hand to answer questions about the space\, the ecological benefits of green roofs\, and talk about our current activities around Newtown Creek! DESCRIPTION:Join us every week on Wednesday from 6pm to sunset as we weed\, mulch\, tend plants and blossoms\, sometimes plant and water (if necessary). We have tools and gloves (but bring yours if you have them/prefer). Bring a water bottle (hydration is key! for us and the gardens). Everyone welcome but please note in your sign up if you are bringing others. \nRequired signup. \nCome hang – meet other garden aficionados\, get grounded – literally\, identify plants\, discuss best gardening practices! \nWe focus on open spaces at 50 Kent Avenue and 86 Kent Avenue. Please keep an eye on your email (or instagram) after registering to confirm which location we’ll meet at on a given day!
