SUMMARY:Volunteer Workday at Garden of Life
DESCRIPTION:GreenThumb community gardens are developed\, led\, and cared for by dedicated volunteers who critically upkeep community gardens as public green spaces. Garden of Life is a serene\, green oasis in Bed-Stuy\, Brooklyn cared for by a few long-standing community members. The garden features 16 food-producing plots\, wheelchair-accessible pathways\, and dedicated gathering spaces. \nDuring this volunteer day\, participants will engage in meaningful\, hands-on projects\, such as building two (2) types of plant-supporting trellises and adding soil to vegetable plots. This is a great opportunity for those interested in getting involved with a community garden! Bring water\, snacks\, and comfortable\, weather-appropriate clothing. Please note that some activities may involve lifting heavy material and moving\, bending\, and squatting for long periods. \nGroups of 5 or more can sign up by contacting the volunteer coordinator at Kyleen.Sanchez@parks.nyc.gov. \nThis event is co-hosted by NYC Parks GreenThumb. We are proud to be the nation’s largest urban community gardening program\, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. With GreenThumb’s support\, community gardens are centers of environmental justice\, ensuring that our city is fairer\, safer\, and greener for all. GreenThumb’s events are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Kingsland Wildflowers Open Hours
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Open Hours at Kingsland Wildflowers — an opportunity for the public to learn about the green roofs\, the native plants present\, and the Newtown Creek while enjoying the golden hour from our scenic wildflower meadows. Open hours are free and open to the public and will take place every Friday from April 18 to June 27\, 2025\, weather-permitting. \nFor the 2025 Open Hours season\, we are excited to also be opening our Newtown Native Nursery\, allowing visitors to explore (and purchase) native plants that we grow on site\, and can be a great addition for any greenspace you may have or be involved in! \nThis is a family friendly event\, kindly keep in mind that we use our green roofs as an educational resource\, we prefer that furry friends stay at home. NCA staff will be on hand to answer questions about the space\, the ecological benefits of green roofs\, and talk about our current activities around Newtown Creek! We will have drinks and light refreshments on hand for guests to enjoy. \nMusic on select Fridays \nMay 13th – Cal Fish \nJune 16th – Liver \nJune 27th – Maidenhead +DJ Chase Coppins \nPlease note that not all roofs are ADA compliant\, our paths have a 34” width and can have some uneven surfaces including bluestone\, small gravel\, and soil.
