SUMMARY:Coastal Cleanup (Brooklyn Bridge Park)
DESCRIPTION:Coastal Cleanup Volunteers help keep our shorelines clean by removing debris that washes into the park’s marshes and beaches with the tides. Volunteers also document the types of trash collected—data that is shared with the Ocean Conservancy to support global efforts in understanding and combating plastic pollution. \nVolunteers of all ages are welcome; under 16’s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. DESCRIPTION:Join the NYC Parks Stewardship team to plant beachgrass (Ammophila breviligulata) at Coney Island Creek! Ammophila is the dominant coastal grass in our region\, helping to build and stabilize front dunes. Because the grass primarily spreads by rhizome\, we harvest bare-root plant material from the Greenbelt Native Plant Center production plots to replant into dune restoration projects. Volunteers should dress in clothes that can get dirty\, close-toed shoes\, and warm layers. This event has been funded in part by NYC Service. \nLocation: Coney Island Creek Park\, Brooklyn. DESCRIPTION:Garden mapping is a great way to beat the winter blues and plan for the season. In this workshop\, participants will learn how to create a simple to-scale physical map of their garden space to support garden planning and record keeping. We’ll discuss environmental factors that affect planning\, such as common wind directions\, rainy or dry areas\, the direction of water drainage (lowest area)\, the pattern of the sun\, and any shadows from large structures or trees. Attendees will receive supportive literature on plant spacing\, soil chemistry\, companion plants\, and incompatible plants to support garden planning. \nNYC Parks GreenThumb hosts this event. We are proud to be the nation’s most extensive urban community gardening program\, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City.
