DESCRIPTION:Community Dune Grass Planting This Saturday \nThis Saturday\, April 6th from 10am to 2pm\, the American Littoral Society and the National Wildlife Federation are hosting a community dune grass planting event at Bayview & Seagate Avenues in Coney Island Creek Park\, Brooklyn\, NY 11224. \n  \nWe’re looking to get 3\,500 plants in the ground\, adding to the 10\,000 that students from two dozen NYC schools have already planted with NWF’s Resilient Schools and Communities (RiSC) program this year. \n  \nOnce planted and established\, the plants stabilize the dunes\, create a buffer against erosion and flooding from coastal storms and help build community resilience. \n  \nLocal Transportation: \nThe nearest Subway stop is the Coney Island – Stillwell Avenue Station (1.5 mile walk to site) \nQ\, D\, F\, N trains all go there\, from there you will need to take a bus to get to the park. \nBuses: B36\, B74 \n  \nWeather/Attire: \nThe weather for Saturday is calling for cloudy conditions and mid-40s. Please dress for the weather with appropriate clothing and close-toed shoes that can get wet and dirty. \n  \nIt’s always colder and windier by the water. Make sure you wear proper attire including: a warm jacket\, poncho or rain jacket\, hat\, gloves\, scarf\, sunglasses etc. \n  \nFood/Snacks/Water: \nParticipants should bring their own water (in reusable bottles) and snacks as needed. \n  \nRestrooms: \nThere are no restrooms on site. The nearest restroom facilities are located in Kaiser Park near the baseball diamond\, a roughly 15-minute walk from the shoreline. \n  \nGloves and tools will be provided. \n  \nQuestions? This principle still holds true today\, as 400 Montauk Community Garden seeks to have more volunteers and members of the space to continue a legacy of learning how to grow your own food\, have access to fresh vegetables and remain connected to their roots. \nAre you new to community gardening? This is a great opportunity to practice garden design skills\, meet the gardeners\, and learn how to join a community garden. Volunteers will work alongside gardeners and GreenThumb staff preparing the site for new raised beds by disassembling old beds\, leveling the soil\, and cleaning up various debris. \nGloves and tools will be provided. Bring water\, snacks\, and clothes and shoes/boots you don’t mind getting dirty. DESCRIPTION:Join NYC H2O and the NYC Parks Department as we remove invasive plants and plant native plants at Ridgewood Reservoir! \nThe Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is a 50+ acre natural oasis that straddles the border of Brooklyn and Queens. Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water\, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950’s and was decommissioned in the 1980’s. \nSince then\, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin. DESCRIPTION:Please join us along with CM Mercedes Narcisse’s office for a volunteer cleanup at Canarsie Park in Brooklyn! \nCanarsie Park connects to Canarsie Pier and overlooks Paerdegat Basin. Before the 1920s\, Paerdegat Basin was Paerdegat Creek\, a freshwater tidal creek connecting to Jamaica Bay. Canarsie Park is known for its recreation facilities\, but it is also home to a surprising number of diverse wildlife spanning multiple acquatic ecosystems due to Canarsie’s close proximity to the seashore and its lesser known wetland hiking trails. \nThe cleanup will run from 10am to 12:00pm. Gloves\, garbage bags and pickers will be provided. \nPlease wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. 💧 \nThanks to Council Member Mercedes Narcisse for supporting our environmental stewardship programs.

Come lend a hand weeding\, mulching and planting the garden beds in BIP’s 50 Kent Ave section (map: 41 N 11th St). We have tools and gloves (but bring yours if you have them!). Wear clothes that can get dirty and a bring a water bottle. DESCRIPTION:Join hands with community gardeners and GreenThumb staff for a volunteer workday at 400 Montauk Community Garden! \nGreenThumb community gardens are developed\, led\, and cared for by dedicated volunteer gardeners who critically upkeep them as public green spaces. 400 Montauk Community Garden was first established in 1986 and ran by staples in the community seeking to grow their own food and connect with each other. This principle still holds true today\, as 400 Montauk Community Garden seeks to have more volunteers and members of the space to continue a legacy of learning how to grow your own food\, have access to fresh vegetables and remain connected to their roots. \nAre you new to community gardening? This is a great opportunity to practice garden design skills\, meet the gardeners\, and learn how to join a community garden. Volunteers will work alongside gardeners and GreenThumb staff preparing the site for new raised beds by disassembling old beds\, leveling the soil\, and cleaning up various debris. \nGloves and tools will be provided. Bring water\, snacks\, and clothes and shoes/boots you don’t mind getting dirty. DESCRIPTION:In April 2024\, EPA proposed a plan to protect people living and working in residential and commercial buildings at the Meeker Avenue Plume Superfund site in the Greenpoint/East Williamsburg area of Brooklyn.
