SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED: Volunteer Workday: George Washington Carver Community Garden
DESCRIPTION:Due to inclement weather\, this event has been rescheduled to Saturday\, February 15\, 2025 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. \n*** \nGreenThumb community gardens are developed\, led\, and cared for by dedicated volunteers who critically upkeep community gardens as public green spaces. \nFounded in 1996 with the help of the neighboring school\, I.S. 318 (its former namesake)\, this garden has ample space to grow produce\, flora\, start seeds\, care for chickens\, and host community programs. George Washington Carver Community Garden (est. 2023) currently has over twenty-two (22) raised beds for growing food\, multiple bee hives\, compost systems\, and vast landscape planting opportunities. As a recipient of support from NYC Parks GreenThumb\, the garden group must collectively fulfill certain requirements\, including\, but not limited to\, hosting Open Hours (April 1-Oct 31)\, maintaining the garden\, having a clear path to membership for all\, and hosting two free community events. \nGreenThumb is hosting a public Garden Interest Meeting and Volunteer Day with intent to triple the garden group’s membership\, strengthen community partnerships\, and establish a maintenance plan to support the garden’s future success. Come learn about grassroots community gardening and lend a hand! Bring water\, snacks\, and comfortable\, weather-appropriate clothing. Please note that some activities may involve lifting heavy material and moving\, bending\, and squatting for long periods. \nGroups of 5 or more can sign up by contacting the volunteer coordinator at Kyleen.Sanchez@parks.nyc.gov. \nThis event is co-hosted by NYC Parks GreenThumb. We are proud to be the nation’s largest urban community gardening program\, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. With GreenThumb’s support\, community gardens are centers of environmental justice\, ensuring that our city is fairer\, safer\, and greener for all. GreenThumb’s events are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:The Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Join the world in connecting to birds – February 14–17\, 2025\nProject Goal\nEach February\, for four days\, the world comes together for the love of birds. Over these four days we invite people to spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them to us. These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations. \nWhat’s Changed?\nWe use pictures of birds and people from around the world participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count. No matter what corner of the world you live in or visit\, we want to share in your joy of birdwatching. \nOur History\nLaunched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society\, the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) was the first online participatory-science project (also referred to as community science or citizen science) to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real time. Birds Canada joined the project in 2009 to provide an expanded capacity to support participation in Canada. In 2013\, we became a global project when we began entering data into eBird\, the world’s largest biodiversity-related participatory science (community science or citizen science) project. \nEach year our participation grows as more people of all ages around the world spend their weekend counting\, learning about\, and celebrating birds. See results from past years highlighting the data and trends from the Great Backyard Bird Counts. \nJoint Partnership\nThe Great Backyard Bird Count is an inter-organizational effort between the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, National Audubon Society\, and Birds Canada. We work together to bring the joys of bird watching to our members. \n\n\nJoin Us\nWhether you count one bird or hundreds\, participating is easy and fun for all ages! Let birds bring you closer to nature and to each other by spending four days in February with us! \n\nHow to Participate\n\n\n\n\nParticipating is easy\, fun to do alone or with others\, and can be done anywhere you find birds. \nStep 1: Decide where you will watch birds. \nStep 2: Watch birds for 15 minutes or more\, at least once over the four days\, February 16–19\, 2024. \nStep 3: Identify all the birds you see or hear within your planned time/location and use the best tool for sharing your bird sightings: \n\nIf you are a beginning bird admirer and new to bird identification\, try using the Merlin Bird ID app to tell us what birds you are seeing or hearing.\nIf you have participated in the count before and want to record numbers of birds\, try the eBird Mobile app or enter your bird list on the eBird website (desktop/laptop).\n\nIf you already contribute to Merlin or eBird\, continue what you are doing! All entries over the 4-days count towards GBBC.

Or quietly give away those “unexpected” gifts. \nJoin us to recycle\, reuse and reduce! Drop off your cleaned and useable CLOTHES\, SHOES\, BOOKS\, & TOYS – and browse the selection. Every Greencycle Swap saves +1\,500 pounds of perfectly good stuff from our landfills! \nSIMPLE RULES: \n• RSVP here: https://forms.gle/8Y2nRofES52Guh2Z9 \n• ONLY cleaned\, gently used\, working and useable items please. \n• NO need to bring things to take things. \n• ONLY clothes\, shoes\, books & toys. SUMMARY:Volunteer Workday at Phoenix Community Garden
DESCRIPTION:GreenThumb community gardens are developed\, led\, and cared for by dedicated volunteers who critically upkeep community gardens as public green spaces. Since 2006\, Phoenix Community Garden in Ocean Hill-Brownsville\, Brooklyn\, has been growing thousands of pounds of culturally-preferred fruits and vegetables each year to support the local community. The garden provides a seasonal Fresh Food Box\, a large gathering space\, and hosts various events for the Ocean Hill-Brownsville community. \nDuring this volunteer workday\, participants will take part in an impactful\, hands-on project to build raised garden beds\, expanding the garden’s capacity to grow fresh food. Gardeners are excited to share their knowledge and foster new connections. Bring water\, snacks\, and comfortable\, weather-appropriate clothing. Please note that some activities may involve lifting heavy material and moving\, bending\, and squatting for long periods. \nIn case of inclement weather\, this volunteer workday will be rescheduled to Sunday\, February 9\, 2025\, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. \nWebsite: https://www.phoenixcommunitygarden.org/

SUMMARY:Bonsai Beginner Workshop at Strong Rope Brewery - Gowanus
DESCRIPTION:Beginner workshops are perfect for you to grab your friends\, grab a drink and come make tiny trees! We’re bringing the awesome art of bonsai out of the hedged in gardens and into the streets! Or at least into your favorite bars/breweries/pubs. Bonsai Bar is a night of fun you don’t want to miss. Learn the fundamental skills and techniques behind the art of bonsai while enjoying a night out with friends! Our teachers will introduce core concepts and guide your experience as you pot\, prune\, and design your very own bonsai tree! Our Guarantee: These tiny trees are so hardy we guarantee you can keep yours alive\, or we’ll replace it. \nThis workshop will be hosted at Strong Rope Brewery – Gowanus. Showcasing New York ingredients to make truly regional beer\, Strong Rope brews and serves hand-crafted ales & lagers at our Brooklyn locations (in Red Hook & Gowanus) and seasonally in the Adirondacks. Strong Rope Brewery is owned and operated by husband and wife team\, Jason Sahler and Christina Quintero. As a New York state farm brewery\, our approach is to examine what truly regional beer is. We look to explore the capabilities of our regional malt and hops while working directly with our farming partners and the land. We strive to create beers with intention and care and give our ales and lagers a true sense of place. As a family-run business\, we support other local producers by serving New York state wine\, cider\, and spirits. \nUnder 21 policy: Please contact Strong Rope Brewery – Gowanus for details regarding underage entry \nFor more about Bonsai Bar and what to expect at our classes\, visit our website at: https://bonsaibar.com/products/strong-rope-gowanus \nHappens on the following Dates:\nJan 22\, 2025\, 6:00pm to 8:00pm Timezone: EST\nFeb 5\, 2025\, 6:00pm to 8:00pm Timezone: EST\nMar 5\, 2025\, 6:00pm to 8:00pm Timezone: EST
