SUMMARY:Volunteer Landscaping and Cleanup at the Ridgewood Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:Join NYC H2O and the NYC Parks Department as we remove invasive plants and plant native plants at Ridgewood Reservoir!\n\n\n\nThe Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is a 50+ acre natural oasis that straddles the border of Brooklyn and Queens. Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water\, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950’s and was decommissioned in the 1980’s. \nSince then\, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin. This fresh water source is critical to migrating birds on the Atlantic Flyway. \nWe will meet in the parking lot on Vermont Place\, Brooklyn\, NY 11207\, across the street from the reservoir. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Astronomy Night Sky (Brower Park Library)
DESCRIPTION:Want to learn more about what we can see in the night sky? What can we see in an urban environment with light pollution? Plenty! Join the Brower Park Library for an evening of stargazing on the sidewalk outside the branch. We’ll learn how to find objects and identify them in the night sky. \n2 Evenings \n\n\nThu\, Jan 22\, 5:00pm to 6:30pm ~ Astronomy Night: Sidewalk Stargazing: Moon Phase:  Waxing crescent 16.55%.  A Waxing Crescent is the first Phase after the New Moon during this time the features of the moon surface can be beautifully seen. The moon is close to the sun in the sky and therefor is mostly dark. The right edge of the moon however is bright and keeps getting brighter as the days get close to the next phase which is a First Quarter with a 50% illumination of the lunar body.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThu\, Feb 5\, 5:00pm to 6:30pm ~ Astronomy Night: Sidewalk Stargazing: Moon Phase:  Waning gibbous 84%.  During this phase the Moon can be seen in the early morning daylight hours on the western horizon. This is the first phase after the Full Moon occurs. It lasts roughly 7 days with the Moon’s illumination growing smaller each day until the Moon becomes a Last Quarter Moon with an illumination of 50%. The average Moon rise for this phase is between 9pm and Midnight depending on the age of the phase. The moon rises later and later each night setting after sunrise in the morning.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Lunar New Year: Art of Chinese Dance (Marine Park)
DESCRIPTION:The Year of the Horse is here! Celebrate the Lunar New Year in style with MPA\, Brooklyn Public Library\, and the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company for an interactive dance experience featuring dazzling costumes and eye-catching props\, plus crafts and fun for the whole family! \nThe 2026 Year of the Horse program from Nai-Ni Chen is a lively\, interactive dance experience that invites young audiences to discover the richness and diversity of Chinese culture through movement\, music\, and storytelling as the artists guide students on a journey across regions and traditions—explaining how geography\, history\, and community celebrations shape classical and folk dance forms. SUMMARY:Prospect Park Guided Walk: Winter Birds
DESCRIPTION:Prospect Park is home to many bird species during the winter months; spend some time observing them on this guided walk.\n\n\n\nJoin LES Ecology Center and Elijah Shiffer for a guided walk at Prospect Park\, taking some time to observe the birds found there during winter. \nThe spring and fall migrations get more attention\, but winter is still an exciting time for birdwatching in New York City. Prospect Park is a great place to look for hardy resident and winter visitor species. The feeders here are well-maintained and attract quite a variety of songbirds; here we’ll keep an eye out for migrant finches and sparrows as well as the elusive Rusty Blackbird and Orange-crowned Warbler. We’ll then walk around the lake\, where winter is the best time for many ducks and other waterbirds. On the lake there’s always the possibility of finding rarities that usually winter in tidal marshes or coastal waters – including sea ducks\, grebes\, and even loons\, and in the mixed flocks of gulls we may even be able to pick out wanderers from the far north such as Iceland Gull or Black-headed Gull. \n\nSign up here.
