SUMMARY:BKCM Midsummer Nights Concert Series 2024
DESCRIPTION:Midsummer Nights Music Series – Free Community Concerts\n\nAs the hot sun sinks\, Midsummer Nights will bring another kind of heat to Seventh Ave with four golden-hour concerts on BKCM’s front stoop on July 18\, July 25\, August 1 and August 8 at 6:30 PM. \nThis year’s series is curated by rising jazz star and 2023-24 BKCM Jazz Leadership Fellow Melanie Charles and Make Jazz Trill Again\, the NYC-based collective she co-founded. Melanie has handpicked a lineup of artists who are expanding the borders of contemporary jazz in NYC\, infusing elements of R&B\, hip-hop\, Latin\, African and experimental musical traditions across four concerts that offer something for music lovers of all ages and backgrounds. \nLimited seating will be available in front of BKCM’s building at 58 Seventh Ave. RSVP and learn more about this year’s curator and artists below! \n\n \n  \n\n\nAbout Melanie Charles:  \n\n\n\n\n\nThere are very few artists whose sound can capture the sentiments of a generation. The Brooklyn-born-and-raised Melanie Charles is one of these artists. Over the past few decades\, she has made a name for herself through dynamic engagements with jazz\, soul and R&B. Her bold genre-bending style has been embraced by a range of artists including Wynton Marsalis\, SZA\, Mach-Hommy\, Gorillaz and The Roots. In 2021\, she appeared on NPR’s Tiny Desk and stunned with her eclectic style. Through it all\, she has remained committed to making music that pushes listeners to consider new possibilities — both sonically and politically. Make Jazz Trill  Again a project that she launched in 2016\, demonstrates her allegiance to everyday people\, especially the youth\, and is focused on taking jazz from the museum to the streets. “I love jazz\, I really fell in love with it deeply. But I was interested in young people interacting with it\,” Charles says. The album Y’all Don’t (Really) Care About Black Women is reflective of Charles’ tremendous versatility and imagination as an artist\, but also of her deep care for community. \n  \n  \n  \n\nAbout Make Jazz Trill Again\n\n\n\n\n\nMake Jazz Trill Again (MJTA) began as a modest hashtag in the mid-2010s by Melanie Charles\, evolving into a cultural movement advocating for the revitalization of independent jazz in the digital age. Today\, MJTA thrives as a dynamic network\, curating performances\, hosting a podcast series\, and organizing the Trill Mega Jam—a vibrant\, improvisation-centered event. Musicians of diverse backgrounds and skill levels come together in unconventional spaces\, celebrating pure connection through music. MJTA is a grassroots movement\, inviting all to bring their instruments and positive energy to join the jam! \n\n  \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nConcert 1 – July 18 – Trill Mega Jam hosted by Melanie Charles\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAndromeda Turre\nVocalist and composer Andromeda Turre has honed her craft over a lifetime immersed in music. Kiddos will be giving their creative suggestions to help shape each storyline! Every class is a brand new adventure! \nA Rosie Day \nA Rosie Day’s innovative program is designed for parents/guardians and children aged 12 months and above. SUMMARY:Volunteer Landscaping and Cleanup at the Ridgewood Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:Join NYC H2O and the NYC Parks Department as we remove invasive plants and plant native plants at Ridgewood Reservoir! \nThe Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is a 50+ acre natural oasis that straddles the border of Brooklyn and Queens. Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water\, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950’s and was decommissioned in the 1980’s. \nSince then\, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin. This fresh water source is critical to migrating birds on the Atlantic Flyway. \nWe will meet in the parking lot on Vermont Place\, Brooklyn\, NY 11207\, across the street from the reservoir.

SUMMARY:Summer Plant ID Walk at the Ridgewood Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:Caitlin Lynch is an urban naturalist\, environmental scientist and plant aficionado based in Brooklyn. She has worked with the NYC Parks Department\, Natural Areas Conservancy\, and NYC H20 on a myriad of restoration\, stewardship\, and ecological surveying projects throughout the city.\nNew York City is home to over 1\,300 native plants and many other naturalized species that provide ecosystem services including specialized habitat\, food\, and a host of medical and other uses. The grounds of Ridgewood Reservoir\, located in Highland Park\, have been maintained and managed to restore many of the native plant species to this area. The late summer/early fall is an ideal time for plant ID in the Northeast with its abundance of late blooming flowers\, seed/fruit formations\, and early leaf color changes.\nDuring this ~1 hour walk\, Caitlin will teach about common and scientific plant names\, how to identify certain species\, their characteristics\, their family relationships\, their uses (ecological and social) and some botanic terms. The tour will include weedy plants\, herbaceous plants\, flowering plants\, trees\, grasses and common invasives. Participants are encouraged to contribute knowledge\, ask questions and store their observations in their plant ID app of choice. The tour route will include the West Causeway and other park areas.\nAppropriate for all ages and all levels. Event is rain or shine but may be rescheduled in the case of storm conditions.
