DESCRIPTION:Join us for a solar art class outside at Transmitter Park. \nHave you ever seen a blue photograph? If you lived in the 1800s you would have. By placing objects on special paper and exposing the paper to sunlight\, early photographers created blue images\, called cyanotypes or sun prints. Join us together with artist and photographer Amy Williams for an outdoor printmaking workshop using native foliage. \n\nNo experience necessary\nYou will take home a frameable print\nAll supplies will be provided\nAges 12+\n\nMeet at the Greenpoint entrance at the Friends’ table. \n*Registration required. \nAmy Williams is a photographer and mixed media artist living and working in Greenpoint\, Brooklyn. Trained in traditional photographic methods\, Williams continues to embrace these techniques despite the digital revolution of the photography world. Her photographs have been featured in the French art magazine Frog\, as well as the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City. Williams has exhibited extensively at 440 Gallery in Brooklyn and has been included in two group shows at Galerie de Multiples in Paris\, France. DESCRIPTION:North Brooklyn Neighbors is teaming up with North Brooklyn Mutual Aid for a fun-filled event. \nWe will be using our new XRF machine to offer free soil testing. Bring a sample of your soil in a clear\, plastic sandwich bag with about 2 cups of soil. We will use our machine to test the heavy metal (i.e. lead) content of your soil and results will be available immediately. Information on safely dealing with high levels of lead in soil will be available in English\, Polish\, and Spanish. \nStop by to collect up to three 40-lb bag of compost made from NYC food scraps and yard waste. Register in advance for compost pickup\, only one sign-up per household please. \nNo registration required for soil testing.

In 2014 he was awarded the Right Livelihood Prize\, sometimes called the ‘alternative Nobel\,’ in the Swedish Parliament. He’s also won the Gandhi Peace Award\, and honorary degrees from 19 colleges and universities. He has written over a dozen books about the environment\, including his first\, The End of Nature\, published in 1989\, and his latest book is The Flag\, the Cross\, and the Station Wagon: A Graying American Looks Back at his Suburban Boyhood and Wonders What the Hell Happened. \nElizabeth Kolbert is a Pulitzer Prize-winning Journalist and author of Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man\, Nature\, and Climate Change and Under a White Sky: The Nature of the Future\, and has been a staff writer at The New Yorker since 1999. Previously\, she worked at the Times\, where she wrote the Metro Matters column and served as the paper’s Albany bureau chief. Her three-part series on global warming\, “The Climate of Man\,” won the 2006 National Magazine Award for Public Interest. In 2010\, she received the National Magazine Award for Reviews and Criticism. She is the editor of “The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2009” and the author of “The Prophet of Love: And Other Tales of Power and Deceit\,” “Field Notes from a Catastrophe\,” and “The Sixth Extinction\,” for which she won the Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction in 2015. Here at the park\, we think public spaces can be spaces for engagement\, continued education\, and discussion; “Nature & Urbanism” is part of an initiative to introduce more programming that helps adults learn & grow beyond the classroom. \n  \nCities have never been neutral spaces. They are in constant flux and the very embodiment of politics in action. While we’re used to seeing cities as sites of resistance and revolutionary possibility (e.g. Stonewall\, Black Lives Matter\, Anti-War protests)\, we tend to overlook the politics of the built environment itself. \nWhat makes a space natural or unnatural? And how do you know nature when you see it?
