SUMMARY:North Brooklyn Community Boathouse Public Paddle
DESCRIPTION:No matter where you live\, NBCB is your community boathouse! \nThe Public Paddle Series lets us do what we do best: fulfill our mission to enable access to the waterways of New York City for our local community. \nOur Public Paddles occur during our regular season (June-Sept)\, and happen twice a month\, alternating between our 29-foot Langley canoes\, and our fleet of sit-on-top kayaks. Trained ACA trip leaders will guide participants down Newtown Creek\, and often out toward the East River. There’s an opportunity to pause to take photos\, and enjoy the views of Manhattan\, Brooklyn and Queens. These trips run between 20-30 minutes throughout the day. \nPaddling is free! Our public paddles are child friendly\, but there is a minimum height requirement of 4’10” on kayak trips in order to ensure the boat will remain balanced. \nCanoe Public Paddles take place at Manhattan Avenue Street End Park\, while Kayak Public Paddles take place across the creek at Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center. \nIt is recommended to check the NBCB website and social media accounts in the morning in case of an inclement weather cancelation. \nPublic paddles are free and open to everyone. We welcome all our neighbors and members of other community organizations. Together\, let’s learn more about Greenpoint’s history\, environmental challenges and successes\, and residents. Get out on the water and see the neighborhood as you never have before! \nGot it? We can’t wait to see you! Blue skies\, full boats–can’t lose! \nNBCB sincerely thanks the Greenpoint Community Environment Fund and the Office of the New York State Attorney General and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for financial support for our Public Paddle series. \n*** \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKAYAKING SCHEDULE\nQueens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center\, 57-28 2nd St\, Long Island City\, NY 11101\n\n\nJune 8th\, 11am-3pm (June 9 rain out day) \n\n\nJuly 13th\, 12-4pm (City of Water Day Edition) \n\n\nAug 17th\, 12-4pm (Aug 18 rain out day) \n\n\nSept 14th\, 12-4pm (Sept 15 rain out day) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n***\nCANOEING SCHEDULE\nManhattan Avenue Street End Park\, Greenpoint\, Brooklyn\n\n\nMay 25th\, 12-4pm (Opening Day / Memorial Day weekend) \n\n\nJune 22th\, 12-4pm (Juneteenth Paddle) >> CANCELED DUE TO HEAT \n\n\nJuly 13th\, 12-4pm (City of Water Day Edition) >> CANCELED DUE TO RAIN \n\nAug 10th\, 12-4pm

SUMMARY:Bird Watching/ Observación de Aves at Ridgewood Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:Join author and naturalist Heather Wolf for a bird walk at the Ridgewood Reservoir. With the weather turning it’s a great time to come out and enjoy the reservoir and see some birds! 🐦🕊️ \nThe Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is a 50+ acre natural oasis that straddles the border of Brooklyn and Queens. Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water\, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950’s and was decommissioned in the 1980’s. \nSince then\, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin. This fresh water source is critical to migrating birds on the Atlantic Flyway. \nWe will meet in the parking lot on 58-2 Vermont Place\, Brooklyn\, NY 11207\, across the street from the reservoir. \nThis event will be in both spanish and english.
