DESCRIPTION:No matter where you live\, NBCB is your community boathouse! \nThe Public Paddle Series lets us do what we do best: fulfill our mission to enable access to the waterways of New York City for our local community. \nOur Public Paddles occur during our regular season (June-Sept)\, and happen twice a month\, alternating between our 29-foot Langley canoes\, and our fleet of sit-on-top kayaks. Trained ACA trip leaders will guide participants down Newtown Creek\, and often out toward the East River. There’s an opportunity to pause to take photos\, and enjoy the views of Manhattan\, Brooklyn and Queens. These trips run between 20-30 minutes throughout the day. \nPaddling is free! Our public paddles are child friendly\, but there is a minimum height requirement of 4’10” on kayak trips in order to ensure the boat will remain balanced. \nCanoe Public Paddles take place at Manhattan Avenue Street End Park\, while Kayak Public Paddles take place across the creek at Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center. \nIt is recommended to check the NBCB website and social media accounts in the morning in case of an inclement weather cancelation. \nPublic paddles are free and open to everyone. DESCRIPTION:Returning for its 10th season\, University Open Air (UOA) will be held in the grounds around the Prospect Park Boathouse from September 19th – 29th\, 2024. Please see the full schedule below. Registration is not required\, but it allows teacher to better prepare for their classes. \nAs it always does\, UOA provides immigrant teachers\, professors\, and academics\, who were trained outside of the U.S.\, an opportunity to share their knowledge with the public by welcoming students to enjoy free classes in collaboration with the Prospect Park Alliance. SUMMARY:Hedgework Eco Data Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by Hedgework\, one of the Yard’s 2024 public art installations\, join co-creator Mark Shepard for an interactive eco data workshop. Mark will take participants inside the data collected by the hedge and discuss the skills needed to document and interpret data that can be applied through varied avenues from policymaking to art creation. As part of the group discussion\, participants will explore environmental concerns and the power of data to help understand our impact on the environment. The culminating activity will include co-designing a speculative data collection system\, which will support further conversation about ways that professionals working within sustainability and the green economy can leverage data to drive decision-making. \nMark Shepard is a Professor of Architecture and Media Study at the University of Buffalo. He received a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University\, a Master of Fine Arts in Combined Media from Hunter College\, City University of New York\, and a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University. \nThis program is part of the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s ARTS Series. This series uses the arts as conduit for community engagement and activation. Inspired by the Yard’s rotating calendar of exhibitions and public art\, this series celebrates the positive effect the arts have on community dialogue and community enrichment. Programs will be rooted in dialogue and exchange\, and collective artmaking and creation.
