SUMMARY:Volunteer Workday: 400 Montauk Community Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join hands with community gardeners and GreenThumb staff for a volunteer workday at 400 Montauk Community Garden! \nGreenThumb community gardens are developed\, led\, and cared for by dedicated volunteer gardeners who critically upkeep them as public green spaces. 400 Montauk Community Garden was first established in 1986 and ran by staples in the community seeking to grow their own food and connect with each other. This principle still holds true today\, as 400 Montauk Community Garden seeks to have more volunteers and members of the space to continue a legacy of learning how to grow your own food\, have access to fresh vegetables and remain connected to their roots. \nAre you new to community gardening? This is a great opportunity to practice garden design skills\, meet the gardeners\, and learn how to join a community garden. Volunteers will work alongside gardeners and GreenThumb staff preparing the site for new raised beds by disassembling old beds\, leveling the soil\, and cleaning up various debris. \nGloves and tools will be provided. Bring water\, snacks\, and clothes and shoes/boots you don’t mind getting dirty. A portable toilet is onsite. \nLocation:\n400 Montauk Community Garden\n956 New Lots Ave\,\nBrooklyn\, NY 11208 \nJoin us for additional volunteer workdays at this garden on April 6 and April 20. \nPlease follow the email instructions upon registration to ensure you are signed up. \nTo sign up a group of 10 or more volunteers please reach out to kyleen.sanchez@parks.nyc.gov. \nThis event is hosted by NYC Parks GreenThumb. We are proud to be the nation’s largest urban community gardening program\, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. With GreenThumb’s support\, community gardens are centers of environmental justice\, ensuring that our city is fairer\, safer\, and greener for all. GreenThumb’s events are free and open to the public. \n  \nLocation: 400 Montauk Avenue Block Association\, 956 New Lots Avenue\, Brooklyn. Directions to this location \n\nLocation Details: 400 Montauk Community Garden at 956 New Lots Ave\, Brooklyn\, NY 11208\n\nCost: Free\n\nRegistration: Registration Link\n\nContact Email: kyleen.sanchez@parks.nyc.gov

SUMMARY:Woodworking Workshop (BWAC)
DESCRIPTION:Working with Repurposed Wood \nThis workshop\, taught by Ryan Frank\, will be a hands-on introduction to woodworking taught using repurposed wood found on the streets and waterfront of Brooklyn. Attendees will learn practical woodworking skills using hand tools\, working with wood pieces found in nature (i.e. driftwood) and repurposed after human use (i.e. discarded furniture). Each participant will be able to choose pieces of wood that speak to them and that will be used as a raw material to work with during the class. \nWorkshop participants will be taught about wood removal (cutting and chiseling)\, wood marking (carving and engraving) and wood stabilization (sanding\, glueing and finishing techniques) and will be tasked with creating a small wood object using these processes. They will also learn about the material makeup of wood and how its lifecycle from nature to man made objects relates to environmental science and climate change. During the course of the workshop participants will create a unique wood sculpture that they’ll be able to take with them at the end of the class. \nRyan Frank is a visual artist and woodworker based in Brooklyn\, NY. He’s had solo exhibitions at the Invisible Dog Art Center\, the Mattatuck Museum\, the Children’s Museum of the Arts\, the Lilac Preservation Project\, Tremaine Gallery and Icehouse Project Space. Ryan has attended residencies at La Napoule Art Foundation\, Jentel Foundation\, Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts\, Brooklyn Studios for Dance\, SIM Iceland and the Wassaic Project. In addition to his art and woodworking practice Ryan is an ardent runner and practitioner of Tai Chi.  \nThere is limited capacity. Registration is required. \nThis is an off-site program\, located at BWAC in Red Hook. \n\n\nGenerous support for programming and interim library services in Red Hook provided by Amazon.

SUMMARY:Greenpoint’s East River Shoreline History Walk (Transmitter Park)
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of WNYC Transmitter Park Present:\nProgramming from the Germination Station \nPlease join the Friends of WNYC Transmitter Park for a FREE on-site historic walk and talk with Geoffrey Cobb\, Director for Local History at the New York Irish History Roundtable. \nThis walking tour in the park\, will trace the changes and events along Greenpoint’s East River shoreline. Throughout the hour-long program we will hear about Native American beginnings\, first European settlers\, and the development of the industrial Greenpoint piers ending at present day with a shoreline that is a dramatically transformed waterfront. \nPlease register. \n \nGeoffrey Cobb has had a distinguished career teaching history at Erasmus Hall High School. Five books later he continues his writing and research that centers on the history of Greenpoint and Williamsburg. \nThe Germination Station is sponsored by the Friends of WNYC Transmitter Park. Inspiration for this forum is inspired by the Park’s namesake and historic legacy of public radio broadcasting. Add to this the creation of a community for the expression of ideas and support for public green space.

SUMMARY:The Climate Warriors Puppet Show (Central Library)
DESCRIPTION:Inspirational stories from around the world about how little kids have tried to make the earth more beautiful\, safe and sustainable. \nGiven the importance of youngsters to be part of the discussion on climate change\, we have developed a puppet show for children to learn how they can take action to help save Planet Earth. The story captures the journey of three inspirational children located different parts of the world\, who join forces to take action and make a change so as to inspire their parents\, friends and everyone around them to save Planet Earth. These youngsters are brave\, knowledgeable and environmentally responsible. This show will empower your children to understand the importance of climate change and what they can do to help reverse the climate crisis. \nThe show ends in a pledge that the kids take to give back to mother earth. \nThis puppet show has been produced in partnership with The Culture Tree and WonderSpark Puppets \n\nEvents for Youth & Families programs are made possible through generous support from the Estate of Pearl S. Reuillard in memory of her parents Yetta and Louis Schwartz.

\nLocation:\n400 Montauk Community Garden\n956 New Lots Ave\,\nBrooklyn\, NY 11208 \nJoin us for additional volunteer workdays at this garden on April 6 and April 13.
