DESCRIPTION:Registration is required. 18+ \n***\nThis Pi Day (3/14)\, join Astronomy on Tap NYC and the Amateur Astronomer Association at the Greenpoint branch of the Brooklyn Public Library for an evening dedicated to the upcoming solar eclipse! \nHosted by Astronomy on Tap’s own Brian Levine (he/him) aka MC Tycho Brewhaha\, we will feature two presentations – one with information on how to safely watch an eclipse\, and a second about Einstein’s historic use of an eclipse in 1919 to further his research work! We’ll also have a game with prizes\, and everyone in attendance will receive a free pair of eclipse glasses! \nThis event is 18+ and note that while there will not be alcohol served at the event\, it may not be appropriate for children. After the event\, those 21+ are invited to a nearby bar\, to continue the conversation. \nSchedule:\n5:45pm   Doors open\, game begins\n6:00pm   Presentation starts\n7:30pm   Head out of to nearby bar \nOur speakers:\nKat Troche (she/her) is an amateur astronomer and NASA Solar System Ambassador. When she isn’t live-streaming astronomy under the name “Kuiper Kat\,” she is taking it to the street with sidewalk astronomy sessions around the five boroughs\, and runs day-to-day operations for NASA’s Night Sky Network and the Amateur Astronomers Association here in NYC. \nChris Carr (he/him) is a PhD candidate at Columbia in Astronomy. He studies how galaxies like our Milky Way have formed and evolved over the history of the universe. He is a native of Cleveland\, OH and is excited to be returning home to view the solar eclipse over Lake Erie with his family!

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the library for this special series for babies and toddlers exploring STEM: Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, and Math! \nScience Baby is a creative science program for 0-3 year olds led by teaching artist Emma Gordon. The heart of Science Baby is exploring the wonder of science through story\, repetition and play. We explore gravity\, motion\, magnets\, chemical reactions\, light\, water\, bubbles\, sound and more! \nEach child requires a ticket for entry. Tickets for this program are distributed on the day of the program on a first come\, first served basis. Ticket distribution begins when the branch opens at 10AM and continues until all tickets are distributed. Child must be present to receive a ticket. \n\n\nScience Baby is a program created by teaching artist Emma Gordon\, and is part of BPL’s First Five Years initiative which is supported by generous funding from the NY City Council as part of City’s First Readers.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon to learn the basics and operation of a sewing machine with our Fiber Artist/Librarian Molloy Rogers. \nYou will walk away with an understanding of: \n\nSewing machine functions\nStitch settings and when to use them\nSewing machine presser foot functions and other accessories\nBobbin creation and operation\nA project sewn by you to take home\n\nSewing machines are provided but you are welcome to bring your own. \nThis class will qualify you for sewing machine use in the branch at our monthly sewing circles. The series will be followed in the spring and summer by Sustainable Sewing: Mending and Repair. \nMolloy Rogers\, a BPL Children’s Librarian is a maker\, artist\, and designer.  She learned to knit and crochet from her grandmother and taught herself to sew\, spin yarn\, dye fiber\, and make felt. In 2012\, she received the Samuel A. Almon scholarship to Penland School of Crafts\, where she studied the applications of natural dyes\, and the Shibori process as applied to weaving. \nRegistration for this event will open on Monday\, March 18th at 10am ~ Registration has reached capacity.
