SUMMARY:DSNY Residential Bins Info Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Residential Waste Containerization\nTo remove the mountains of black bags on New York City streets\, reclaim public space\, and improve the quality of life for all New Yorkers\, DSNY has announced a plan to containerize all residential trash beginning fall 2024. \nThe new rules also apply to special-use buildings receiving DSNY collection – including City agencies\, nonprofits\, houses of worship\, and professional offices in residential buildings. \nInfo Sessions\nJoin a virtual info session to learn more about DSNY’s new containerization rules. \n\nThursday\, October 17 at 6:00 PM (Spanish and Chinese translations available)\nThursday\, October 24 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, October 31 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, November 7 at 6:00 PM\nThursday\, November 14 at 4:00 PM (Spanish and Chinese translations available)\nThursday\, November 21 at 4:00 PM\nThursday\, December 12 at 4:00 PM (Spanish and Chinese translations available)\n\nResidential Buildings with 1-9 Units\nBeginning November 12\, 2024\, all properties with 1-9 residential units will be required to use bins\, 55 gallons or less\, with secure lids for trash set out. \nIf you already use a bin with a secure lid that is 55 gallons or less for trash set out\, you may continue to use it until June 2026. After that\, you will need to switch to the official NYC Bin. \nLearn more about NYC Bin requirements. \nOfficial NYC Bins\nThe NYC Bin is the next step in New York City’s plan to get black bags of garbage off the streets and make our city cleaner and safer for all New Yorkers. \nOn July 8\, 2024\, the City unveiled the NYC Bin\, the official trash bin for properties with 1-9 residential units. Separate NYC Bins are also available for purchase for recycling and composting\, though they are not required. \nThe NYC Bin is now available for purchase at a significantly lower price than similar bins at retail stores\, at www.bins.nyc or by calling 1-855-NYC-BINS. \nNYC Bins are exclusively available for NYC property owners and building managers and will only be delivered to addresses within the five boroughs. \nThe NYC Bin was selected following the City’s release of an RFP in October 2023 to contract a vendor to produce official NYC Bins. In the RFP\, DSNY mandated that the vendor produce bins according to specifications including\, but not limited to: \n\nCost no more than $50 for the most common size\nAvailable in multiple sizes to accommodate different types of buildings.\nRat resistant\, easy to use by sanitation workers\, and compatible with mechanized collection trucks.\n\nDSNY will retrofit or replace hundreds of collection trucks\, adding mechanical tippers compatible with the new bins. This upgrade will speed up collection and minimize the possibility of spills that occur with manual collection. Two sanitation workers will be needed to operate the mechanism\, and this change will not affect DSNY workforce numbers. \nResidential Buildings with 10+ Units\nNYC is also advancing a plan to containerize trash in larger residential buildings. \nBuildings with 31 or more residential units will be required to use stationary\, on-street containers for their trash\, serviced by DSNY’s new automated side-loading garbage trucks. On-street containers will be assigned to a specific building\, solely for residents of that building. \nBuildings with 10 to 30 units will be able to choose between stationary on-street containers and smaller wheelie bins. \nThe first district with these containers will be Manhattan Community Board 9\, beginning Spring 2025\, with further expansion pending environmental review.

SUMMARY:Climate Struggle and the Fight for the Tonawanda Seneca Way of Life (Central Library)
DESCRIPTION:The Tonawanda Seneca Nation is fighting the construction of a mega-industrial site on the border of the Nation’s present-day reservation territory in Western NY. This development would irreparably harm lands and waters where Tonawanda Seneca citizens continue to hunt\, fish\, and gather traditional medicines\, posing an existential threat to the Nation’s collective continuance on their homelands. We’ll hear from a Tonawanda Seneca Nation citizen and non-Indigenous ally and learn how this struggle is linked to the statewide movement for environmental justice and a livable climate. \nSpeakers: \nChristine G. Abrams is a citizen of the Tonawanda Seneca Nation\, Beaver Clan\, and\, first and foremost\, a mother\, grandmother\, and aunt. Christine had worked for the Council of Chiefs for 27 years and currently serves as TSN Office Administrator. Christine is active in the community and several organizations. \nSarah Howard (they/them) is a settler ally living on unceded Onondaga Nation homelands in Syracuse\, NY. Sarah works for the Tonawanda Seneca Nation Council of Chiefs\, organizing allies to act in solidarity with the Nation in their fight against the Western NY STAMP mega-industrial site. Additionally\, they work as the Student Coordinator for the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Sarah holds an MS in Environmental Science from SUNY ESF and is happiest in the forest. \nRyan Madden (he/him) is a settler ally living on unceded Lenape and Canarsie homelands in Brooklyn\, NY. Ryan is the Climate & Energy Campaigns Director for the Long Island Progressive Coalition where he leads efforts for energy democracy and climate justice in the region and across the state. Ryan is also the Co-Chair of the Indigenous Engagement Committee for NY Renews where he organizes coalition members to act in solidarity with the priorities of various Nations in the territory of NYS. Ryan holds a BA in Political Science & Environmental Studies from SUNY Binghamton. \n350Brooklyn is a volunteer-driven group that mobilizes people to take effective local action to address the climate crisis. We are committed to pursuing solutions that both reduce climate pollution and ensure that low-income New Yorkers and environmental justice communities participate fully in the benefits the shift to renewable energy will bring.
