The series will end on June 30th with a celebration and performance for family and friends. \n\n\nKwok Kay Choey has practiced Tai Chi/Qigong for more than 50 years. SUMMARY:Soul of Food: A Juneteenth Jubilee (Phoenix Community Garden)
DESCRIPTION:Come cook with us in the garden in honor of Juneteenth! \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nCome cook with us in the garden in honor of Juneteenth! During this workshop we’ll get into the legacy of Juneteenth as well as self-liberation efforts throughout the African diaspora and learn about crops that have sustained Black peoples throughout the Southern U.S. and Caribbean. As we prepare and share a meal together\, we’ll reflect on the legacies and continued strides Black folks have made through self–determination and preservation of foodways. \nThis session is a continuation of The Soul of Food\, a Deep Routes workshop series honoring the foodways that connect plants\, peoples\, and lands across Afro–Indigenous diasporas.

SUMMARY:Rise in Spirit: A Juneteenth Celebration (Lefferts House)
DESCRIPTION:Join Prospect Park Alliance for a Juneteenth Celebration produced by the Brooklyn-based Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation.\nJoin Prospect Park Alliance for a Juneteenth Celebration produced by the Brooklyn-based Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation. The family-friendly event will take visitors on a journey of the African Diaspora that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the people of Africa and African descendant cultures. The theme for this Juneteenth celebration at Lefferts Historic House is “Rise in Spirit.” \nEnjoy performances by African dancers and drummers from the Asase Yaa Youth Ensemble\, IET Band jazz quartet\, tap dancer Joseph Webb\, the St. Paul’s Baptist Church gospel choir and theatrical readings by Sharon Gordon. Alliance educators will also provide cooking demonstrations\, historic games and more. \nThe Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to its core tenets to enrich\, educate and entertain. They aspire to empower and strengthen youth by offering them an opportunity to learn\, study and experience the history\, movement and beauty of African Diaspora dance\, music and culture at its highest level. They are entering their third decade\, and oversee a School of the Arts\, the Asase Yaa African American Dance Theater\, an award-winning professional dance ensemble\, a Children’s Summer Art Camps\, and an Arts Outreach program that services public and charter schools throughout the greater New York area. Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation also curates original programming and produces an array of special events and concerts \nThe Juneteenth celebration is part of ReImagine Lefferts\, an initiative funded through a Humanities in Place grant from the Mellon Foundation that is re-envisioning the mission and programming of the museum to explore the stories of resistance and resilience by the Indigenous people of Lenapehoking\, whose unceded ancestral lands the park and house rests upon\, and the Africans who were enslaved by the Lefferts family. The event is also funded in part through support by NYU Brooklyn.

SUMMARY:Make Music NY
DESCRIPTION:Make Music New York is New York City’s only music festival for the people and by the people! \nNow in it’s 18th year\, Make Music New York is a unique festival of free concerts in public spaces throughout the five boroughs of New York City. All of the performances take place annually on June 21st\, the first day of summer and longest day of the year. Completely different from a typical music festival\, Make Music New York is open to anyone who wants to take part. From ten in the morning to ten at night\, every kind of musician — young and old\, amateur and professional\, of every musical persuasion — pours onto streets\, sidewalks\, parks and plazas to share their music with friends\, neighbors\, and strangers. \nThousands of amateur musicians take the opportunity to play in public spaces\, often for the biggest crowds of their lives. Professional musicians perform for new audiences\, who come out from under their headphones to hear unfamiliar groups risk-free. And everyone is invited to sing or play along and enjoy the first day of summer in a spirit of celebration. With over 1\,000 concerts each year\, Make Music New York includes a number of signature projects: “Mass Appeal Concerts\,” in which dozens of musicians band together to perform massive pieces written for a specific type of instrument; “Punk Island”; “Porch Stomp” folk festival; “Street Studios\,” and many more. \nSome 5\,000 musicians performed in the summer of 2019. Along with concerts by individual artists\, Make Music New York proudly partners with dozens of fellow NYC presenters and cultural institutions — including Brooklyn Botanic Garden\, Brooklyn Bridge Park\, Broklyn Public Library\, Governors Island\, Joe’s Pub\, Madison Square Park\, Marcus Garvey Park\, National September 11 Memorial and Museum\, New York Public Library\, Randall’s Island\, Times Square Alliance and many more.
