SUMMARY:Spring Plant ID Walk (Ridgewood Reservoir)
DESCRIPTION:Join naturalist Caitlin Lynch to observe and learn about plants at the Ridgewood Reservoir. \n*** \nCaitlin Lynch is an urban naturalist\, environmental scientist and plant aficionado based in Brooklyn. She has worked with the NYC Parks Department\, Natural Areas Conservancy\, and NYC H20 on a myriad of restoration\, stewardship\, and ecological surveying projects throughout the city. \nNew York City is home to over 1\,300 native plants and many other naturalized species that provide ecosystem services including specialized habitat\, food\, and a host of medical and other uses. The grounds of Ridgewood Reservoir\, located in Highland Park\, have been maintained and managed to restore many of the native plant species to this area. The late summer/early fall is an ideal time for plant ID in the Northeast with its abundance of late blooming flowers\, seed/fruit formations\, and early leaf color changes. \nDuring this ~1 hour walk\, Caitlin will teach about common and scientific plant names\, how to identify certain species\, their characteristics\, their family relationships\, their uses (ecological and social) and some botanic terms. The tour will include weedy plants\, herbaceous plants\, flowering plants\, trees\, grasses and common invasives. Participants are encouraged to contribute knowledge\, ask questions and store their observations in their plant ID app of choice. The tour route will include the West Causeway and other park areas. \nAppropriate for all ages and all levels. Event is rain or shine but may be rescheduled in the case of storm conditions.

You will take home a frameable print. \n*Registration required. \nHow it works… Have you ever seen a blue photograph? If you lived in the 1800s you would have. By placing objects on special paper and exposing the paper to sunlight\, early photographers created blue images\, called cyanotypes or sun prints. \nMeet at Greenpoint Avenue Entrance to the Park \n(Rain date: Sunday\, June 9\, 2024 ) \nAmy Williams is a photographer and mixed media artist living and working in Greenpoint\, Brooklyn. Trained in traditional photographic methods\, Williams continues to embrace these techniques despite the digital revolution of the photography world. Her photographs have been featured in the French art magazine Frog\, as well as the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City. Williams has exhibited extensively and her work is in corporate and private collections in New York\, Washington D.C.\, Seattle\, Paris and Saudi Arabia. \nThe Germination Station is sponsored by the Friends of WNYC Transmitter Park. Inspiration for this forum is inspired by the Park’s namesake and historic legacy of public radio broadcasting. SUMMARY:North Brooklyn Community Boathouse Public Paddle
DESCRIPTION:No matter where you live\, NBCB is your community boathouse! \nThe Public Paddle Series lets us do what we do best: fulfill our mission to enable access to the waterways of New York City for our local community. \nOur Public Paddles occur during our regular season (June-Sept)\, and happen twice a month\, alternating between our 29-foot Langley canoes\, and our fleet of sit-on-top kayaks. Trained ACA trip leaders will guide participants down Newtown Creek\, and often out toward the East River. There’s an opportunity to pause to take photos\, and enjoy the views of Manhattan\, Brooklyn and Queens. These trips run between 20-30 minutes throughout the day. \nPaddling is free! Our public paddles are child friendly\, but there is a minimum height requirement of 4’10” on kayak trips in order to ensure the boat will remain balanced. \nCanoe Public Paddles take place at Manhattan Avenue Street End Park\, while Kayak Public Paddles take place across the creek at Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center. \nIt is recommended to check the NBCB website and social media accounts in the morning in case of an inclement weather cancelation. \nPublic paddles are free and open to everyone. We welcome all our neighbors and members of other community organizations. Together\, let’s learn more about Greenpoint’s history\, environmental challenges and successes\, and residents.
