SUMMARY:Bird Watching/ Observación de Aves at Ridgewood Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:Join author and naturalist Heather Wolf for a bird walk at the Ridgewood Reservoir. With the weather turning it’s a great time to come out and enjoy the reservoir and see some birds! 🐦🕊️ \nThe Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is a 50+ acre natural oasis that straddles the border of Brooklyn and Queens. Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water\, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950’s and was decommissioned in the 1980’s. \nSince then\, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin. This fresh water source is critical to migrating birds on the Atlantic Flyway. \nWe will meet in the parking lot on 58-2 Vermont Place\, Brooklyn\, NY 11207\, across the street from the reservoir. \nThis event will be in both spanish and english.

SUMMARY:Black Birders Week: Birding at Evergreens Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Black Birders Week 2024 (May 26-June 1)! Black Birders Week was created in 2020 by the BlackAFinSTEM Collective to celebrate and highlight Black birders\, scientists\, naturalists\, and outdoor enthusiasts who deserve to enjoy their time in nature without fear of harassment. \n*** \nJoin NYC Audubon’s Sam Philbert\, New York Restoration Project\, and The Evergreens Cemetery Preservation Foundation for a birdy and historical stroll on day three of Black Birders Week. \nStraddling both Brooklyn and Queens\, Evergreens Cemetery was established in 1849 and is a burial spot for several notable Black families and individuals. In addition to being an archive of New York City history\, it contains extraordinary trees and habitat for wildlife including birds. With 225 acres of trees\, rolling hills\, open fields\, vistas of downtown Manhattan\, and ancient tree allées\, the Evergreens offers a chance to roam a beautiful and tranquil oasis in Bushwick. \nThe group will meet at the adjacent Aberdeen Community Garden (98 Aberdeen St\, Brooklyn\, NY 11207) and traverse through it and into the cemetery. Register here. No Limit. Free. \nAccessibility and Directions: \nAberdeen Community Garden contains paved paths and sitting areas. Public restrooms can be found in the garden and in the cemetery\, including in the main building. Free parking is also available at the cemetery. The L train stops right in front of the community garden\, and nearby transit lines at Broadway Junction include the B20 and Q24 buses.
