SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED: Volunteer Workday: George Washington Carver Community Garden
DESCRIPTION:Due to inclement weather\, this event has been rescheduled to Saturday\, February 15\, 2025 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. \n*** \nGreenThumb community gardens are developed\, led\, and cared for by dedicated volunteers who critically upkeep community gardens as public green spaces. \nFounded in 1996 with the help of the neighboring school\, I.S. 318 (its former namesake)\, this garden has ample space to grow produce\, flora\, start seeds\, care for chickens\, and host community programs. George Washington Carver Community Garden (est. 2023) currently has over twenty-two (22) raised beds for growing food\, multiple bee hives\, compost systems\, and vast landscape planting opportunities. As a recipient of support from NYC Parks GreenThumb\, the garden group must collectively fulfill certain requirements\, including\, but not limited to\, hosting Open Hours (April 1-Oct 31)\, maintaining the garden\, having a clear path to membership for all\, and hosting two free community events. \nGreenThumb is hosting a public Garden Interest Meeting and Volunteer Day with intent to triple the garden group’s membership\, strengthen community partnerships\, and establish a maintenance plan to support the garden’s future success. Come learn about grassroots community gardening and lend a hand! Bring water\, snacks\, and comfortable\, weather-appropriate clothing. Please note that some activities may involve lifting heavy material and moving\, bending\, and squatting for long periods. \nGroups of 5 or more can sign up by contacting the volunteer coordinator at Kyleen.Sanchez@parks.nyc.gov. \nThis event is co-hosted by NYC Parks GreenThumb. We are proud to be the nation’s largest urban community gardening program\, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. With GreenThumb’s support\, community gardens are centers of environmental justice\, ensuring that our city is fairer\, safer\, and greener for all. GreenThumb’s events are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Newtown Creek 101: Water Quality
DESCRIPTION:The Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA) is a community-based organization dedicated to restoring\, revealing\, and revitalizing Newtown Creek. NCA works to restore community health\, water quality\, habitat\, access\, and commerce along the waterway. \nDid you know over 1.2 billion gallons of raw sewage enters Newtown Creek every year? Why is there so much untreated sewage getting released into the Creek? Where does it come from? How does it impact water quality? How are humans and wildlife affected by this? What are the health concerns? What is being done to address the raw sewage? How can we help? \nWant to know the answers to these questions? NCA is hosting recurring community information sessions to create an ongoing dialogue for environmental advocacy\, stewardship\, and action around the Creek. Come join the conversation! \nGus Perry is the Greenspace Steward at Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA). Gus is a wildlife and waterway enthusiast with experience in landscaping\, woodworking\, and bicycle maintenance. Through his passion for hyperlocal history and urban-environmental intersections\, Gus has volunteered with numerous community-centered endeavors – including shellfish biotoxin research\, and non-native plant removal. As our Greenspace Steward\, Gus helps run our volunteer events and conduct regular maintenance at various street-end sites\, pollinator gardens\, and green infrastructure assets around Newtown Creek. Gus studied Journalism and Environmental Studies at Eugene Lang College and lives in Ridgewood\, Queens. \nShangtong Sandy Li is the Community Engagement Coordinator at Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA). They have been working on all matters relating to Newtown Creek\, its cleanup\, land use\, and natural resources. Sandy is an environmental justice advocate with a background in climate science\, design\, art\, and education. They have been working with environmental organizations across New York to engage and inform communities on water quality\, parkland alienation\, and climate legislation through accessible and creative storytelling. They aim to connect people with Newtown Creek to show the life\, hope\, and resilience that exists in a Superfund site. Shangtong has a MA from the Columbia Climate School and a BFA in Interdisciplinary Sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art.

SUMMARY:Drawing And Painting from Photo References: Focus on Birds (BIP)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intro to sketching and painting birds from images while learning about some of our local avian species. \nDrawing from life is often considered the ideal\, but capturing ever changing landscapes and moving subjects—especially birds—can be incredibly challenging. \nSketching and painting from photo references could sharpen your life drawing and nature journaling practice and be a fun way to create art from your own photos. \nCameras can oversaturate\, increase contrast and auto sharpen a color image; we will make our images our own by cropping\, editing and recreating lost colors and atmosphere. \nWe will introduce some of our local birds and discuss their unique characteristics and anatomy. We will then explain some of the tools artists have used for centuries\, such as Claude glass\, comparator mirror\, or camera lucida and then move on to transfer methods\, including the grid\, graphite transfer\, and device apps. We’ll touch on using watercolors\, color mixing\, and color matching. \nYou may use printed references or bring a tablet\, phone\, or laptop to practice the grid and graphite transfer method. \nMaterials Provided: \n\nPrinted bird images and magazines\n5″ x 7″ drawing paper\nPencils & pens\nRulers & straight edges\nTracing paper\nGraphite paper\nGraphite pencils\nDrafting & Washi tape\nWatercolor supplies\nWatercolor paper\nColor Wheel\n\nAs always\, please bring along your own favorite supplies if you have any! \nFree Registration required. \nChildren above 14 must be accompanied by a guardian. \nTaught by Monica Schroeder\, scientific illustrator & kayaker\nmonbertkayak@gmail.com \nMedical & Scientific Illustration\nIllustration Portfolio
