SUMMARY:Food Preservation Workshop with Roots Unbound (Greenpoint Library)
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the season of abundance and harvest this session we will create our own pickles. We will be discussing with participants the benefits of pickles and how to prolong the life of fresh produce. \nThis workshop is for those 18 years old and older. It will take place twice. Once on August 3rd and once on August 17th. Registration opens 48 hours beforehand. If you register for the first workshop\, please do not register for the second to allow others to take part. \nRoots Unbound (RU) is an abolitionist grassroots organization based in Brooklyn offering nature-based programming centered around food justice\, therapeutic horticulture and ecological disinvestment to people in the NYC area with a focus on supporting and uplifting people impacted by the carceral system.

SUMMARY:Maker Moments at Domino Park
DESCRIPTION:Domino Park presents Maker Moments: a creativity series for adults.  Introducing a brand-new series in the park! All grown up missing the craft time kids get? Looking to try out a new hobby without breaking the bank? Over the next 3 months\, we’re hosting 4 FREE classes for adults to learn a new skill. \n*All classes will take place in the screw conveyer area (to the left of Tacocina when facing the water).* \n*** \nSaturday\, July 8th\, 4pm – 6pm \nVegan Soapmaking with NerdDNA\nVegan soapmaking avoids animal exploitation and is kinder to the skin than soap that uses synthetic ingredients. Natural colorants and essential oils can be added to create a custom product that suits personal values & preferences. Participants will: \n\nDiscover the benefits of vegan soap for healthy skin\nCreate personalized soap using plant-based ingredients\nEmpower themselves with self-sufficiency\nMake informed decisions about skincare products\n\n*** \nLate July/Early August Dye Class coming soon\nTBD \n*** \nSaturday\, August 19th\, 4pm – 6pm \nSashiko 101: Visible Mending Techniques with Rhiannon Platt\nIn recent years\, Sashiko-style mending has made a comeback after originally being created during the Edo period of Japan to lengthen the life of kimonos. \nNow\, people are using it to give their favorite jeans or shirts a little more wear. This class will teach students the basics of this classic repair technique by perfecting our skills through patching a hole in a piece of scrap fabric. Students can then take this sampler of the technique home to use as a reference later when fixing their favorite clothes. \n*** \nFriday\, September 22nd\, 6pm – 7:30pm \nFall Pickling with Anarchy in a Jar\nDescription coming soon.

SUMMARY:NASA's TechRise Student Challenge: Virtual Educator Workshop #1
DESCRIPTION:NASA Challenges Students to Fly Earth and Space Experiments \nNASA is calling on middle and high school students across the country to submit experiment ideas for a high-altitude balloon or rocket-powered lander test flight that\, if selected as a winner (60 winning teams!) would fly on a NASA-sponsored flight test next summer! The TechRise Student Challenge\, in its third year\, gives students across the country hands-on insight into the payload design and flight test process\, with the goal of inspiring a deeper understanding of space exploration\, Earth observation\, coding\, electronics\, and the value of test data. \n\n\n\nNASA encourages students and their instructors to submit experiment ideas even if they have no prior experience with these activities. A wide variety of resources are available to support teams through the submission process\, including two upcoming virtual educator workshops (details below) and a virtual field trip for students (Sep. 29). Winning teams\, announced in January\, will receive technical support and mentorship from Future Engineers\, who will help students learn the skills they need to turn their experiment idea into reality. They will also receive $1\,500 to build their experiment and a 3D printed flight box in which to build it.\n\n\n\nImportant Dates:\n\n· Aug. 31st: Virtual Educator Workshop #1 RSVP HERE\n· September 14th: Virtual Educator Workshop #2 RSVP HERE\n· September 29th: Virtual student field trip RSVP HERE\n· October 20th: Experiments submissions due\n\n\n\n\nAll TechRise Student Challenge info + submission guidelines can be found here: https://www.futureengineers.org/nasatechrise.
