SUMMARY:Volunteer Workday: Umoja Garden
DESCRIPTION:GreenThumb community gardens are developed\, led\, and cared for by dedicated volunteers who critically upkeep community gardens as public green spaces. \nUmoja Garden\, established in 1999\, is a collectively managed community space known for its thriving chicken coop and robust composting system. Operated without hierarchical leadership\, the garden is stewarded by a rotating committee and features a mix of member beds and community beds that support both individual and shared growing efforts. It also hosts school trips\, wellness events\, art programs\, and educational workshops\, serving as a dynamic hub for environmental learning and community connection. \nJoin us for a volunteer day supporting the months-long effort to redesign and improve the garden’s current composting efforts. Together\, we’ll build a new custom 4-bin composting system—an excellent hands-on opportunity for anyone interested in community gardening. Volunteers should be comfortable using\, or open to learning how to use\, power tools. Please bring water\, snacks\, and wear comfortable\, weather-appropriate clothing and closed-toed shoes. Please note that some tasks may involve lifting heavy materials and extended periods of bending\, squatting\, or moving. \nRegister here! \nThis event is co-hosted by NYC Parks GreenThumb. We are proud to be the nation’s largest urban community gardening program\, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. With GreenThumb’s support\, community gardens are centers of environmental justice\, ensuring that our city is fairer\, safer\, and greener for all. GreenThumb’s events are free and open to the public. \nLocation: Umoja Garden (Garden Beautiful) 1464 Broadway\, Brooklyn. Directions to this location \nCost: Free \nEvent Organizer: Umoja Garden \nContact: 332-280-4408\, Kyleen.Sanchez@parks.nyc.gov
