SUMMARY:Salt Marsh Bird Walk at Marine Park
DESCRIPTION:Come join Sophie Barno to learn about the importance of Northeastern tidal marshes. Practice identification of the flora and fauna with a focus on coastal birds and learn about conservation of this threatened habitat. All levels welcome! \nMarine Park is Brooklyn’s largest park. It contains over 270 bird species\, 100 kinds of fish and 50 types of butterflies. Bordered by Jamaica Bay and fed by Gerritsen Creek\, Marine Park’s saltmarsh provides a critical habitat for aquatic species and help stabilize the shoreline from storm surges and sea level rise.

SUMMARY:NASA's TechRise Student Challenge: Virtual Educator Workshop #1
DESCRIPTION:NASA Challenges Students to Fly Earth and Space Experiments \nNASA is calling on middle and high school students across the country to submit experiment ideas for a high-altitude balloon or rocket-powered lander test flight that\, if selected as a winner (60 winning teams!) would fly on a NASA-sponsored flight test next summer! The TechRise Student Challenge\, in its third year\, gives students across the country hands-on insight into the payload design and flight test process\, with the goal of inspiring a deeper understanding of space exploration\, Earth observation\, coding\, electronics\, and the value of test data. \n\n\n\nNASA encourages students and their instructors to submit experiment ideas even if they have no prior experience with these activities. A wide variety of resources are available to support teams through the submission process\, including two upcoming virtual educator workshops (details below) and a virtual field trip for students (Sep. 29). Winning teams\, announced in January\, will receive technical support and mentorship from Future Engineers\, who will help students learn the skills they need to turn their experiment idea into reality. They will also receive $1\,500 to build their experiment and a 3D printed flight box in which to build it.\n\n\n\nImportant Dates:\n\n· Aug. 31st: Virtual Educator Workshop #1 RSVP HERE\n· September 14th: Virtual Educator Workshop #2 RSVP HERE\n· September 29th: Virtual student field trip RSVP HERE\n· October 20th: Experiments submissions due\n\n\n\n\nAll TechRise Student Challenge info + submission guidelines can be found here: https://www.futureengineers.org/nasatechrise. SUMMARY:Public Art Fund: Screenprinting with Mobile Print Power (Brooklyn Bridge Park)
DESCRIPTION:From Public Art Fund: \nWhat borders did you cross to get here? Who benefits from borders? How do borders shift and change us and the Land we live in?  \nExplore these questions prompted by Nicholas Galanin’s In every language there is Land / En cada  lengua hay una Tierra in a series of hands-on screenprinting sessions led by the Queens-based collective Mobile Print Power (MPP). Using their participatory design methodology and portable silkscreen  printmaking carts\, MPP will engage with communities in Corona Plaza\, Queens\, to co-create new graphic  works based on participants’ experiences of borders across social\, cultural\, and political spaces. \nOn August 5 and 19 at Corona Plaza\, MPP will invite participants to learn screenprinting and unpack the  concept of borders through drawings and words. MPP will then integrate these responses into original  screenprint designs\, which will be used in the final workshop on September 2 in Brooklyn Bridge Park\,  where a wider audience will engage with participant-created designs from the initial two workshops. \nNo registration is needed. Audiences of all ages are encouraged to drop in! \nThis program is curated by Gabriela López Dena. Please\, contact glopez@publicartfund.org for questions and accessibility needs.
