DESCRIPTION:Join NYC H2O and the NYC Parks Department as we remove invasive plants and plant native plants at Ridgewood Reservoir!\n\n\n\nThe Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is a 50+ acre natural oasis that straddles the border of Brooklyn and Queens. Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water\, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950’s and was decommissioned in the 1980’s. \nSince then\, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin. DESCRIPTION:Family friendly fun\, culture\, art + learning with Indigenous dancers\, drummers\, craft + food vendors on October 3 + 4. \n\n\n\n\nJoin Prospect Park Alliance\, the nonprofit that sustains Prospect Park in partnership with the city\, Éenda-Lŭnaapeewáhkiing Collective\, which brings together Lunáapeew/Lenape communities who have been displaced across Turtle Island (North America)\, and American Indian Community House\, which promotes the well-being and visibility of the American Indian community\, for the Third United Lenape/Lunáapeew Nations Pow Wow at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park. \nVendors will be open starting at 10 am and the Grand Entry will kick off the celebrations at 11 am each day. \nPlease note that eventbrite RSVP is encouraged but not required. \nThe first Pow Wow held in Prospect Park since 1972\, and the third ever Lenape Pow Wow in New York City\, this free\, two-day public event welcomes the original Indigenous Lenape peoples who were forced to relocate across the continent back to their ancestral homelands to reunite and share their cultures with Brooklynites today. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. \n. \nWhat to Bring:\nBinoculars if you have them\, comfortable walking shoes\, water\, and weather-appropriate clothing. A limited number of binoculars will be available to borrow. \nPlease Note:\nPets are not permitted on this outing. Depending on attendance\, participants may be divided into smaller groups. DESCRIPTION:Join NYC H2O and the NYC Parks Department as we remove invasive plants and plant native plants at Ridgewood Reservoir!\n\n\n\nThe Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is a 50+ acre natural oasis that straddles the border of Brooklyn and Queens. Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water\, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950’s and was decommissioned in the 1980’s. \nSince then\, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin. The Pier and beach remain a hotspot for fishing\, paddling and picnics. Located within the Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area\, Canarsie Beach and salt marsh also remain hotspots for marine wildlife and birds. \nThe cleanup will run from 10am to 12:00pm.
