SUMMARY:Volunteer Landscaping and Cleanup at the Ridgewood Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:Join NYC H2O and the NYC Parks Department as we remove invasive plants and plant native plants at Ridgewood Reservoir!\n\n\n\nThe Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is a 50+ acre natural oasis that straddles the border of Brooklyn and Queens. Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water\, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950’s and was decommissioned in the 1980’s. \nSince then\, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin. This fresh water source is critical to migrating birds on the Atlantic Flyway. \nWe will meet in the parking lot on Vermont Place\, Brooklyn\, NY 11207\, across the street from the reservoir. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Join the world in connecting to birds – February 13–16\, 2026\nProject Goal\nEach February\, for four days\, the world comes together for the love of birds. Over these four days we invite people to spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them to us. These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations. \nWhat’s Changed?\nWe use pictures of birds and people from around the world participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count. No matter what corner of the world you live in or visit\, we want to share in your joy of birdwatching. \nOur History\nLaunched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society\, the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) was the first online participatory-science project (also referred to as community science or citizen science) to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real time. Birds Canada joined the project in 2009 to provide an expanded capacity to support participation in Canada. In 2013\, we became a global project when we began entering data into eBird\, the world’s largest biodiversity-related participatory science (community science or citizen science) project. \nEach year our participation grows as more people of all ages around the world spend their weekend counting\, learning about\, and celebrating birds. See results from past years highlighting the data and trends from the Great Backyard Bird Counts. \nJoint Partnership\nThe Great Backyard Bird Count is an inter-organizational effort between the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, National Audubon Society\, and Birds Canada. We work together to bring the joys of bird watching to our members. \n\n\nJoin Us\nWhether you count one bird or hundreds\, participating is easy and fun for all ages! Let birds bring you closer to nature and to each other by spending four days in February with us! \n\nHow to Participate\n\n\n\n\nParticipating is easy\, fun to do alone or with others\, and can be done anywhere you find birds. \nStep 1: Decide where you will watch birds. \nStep 2: Watch birds for 15 minutes or more\, at least once over the four days\, February 16–19\, 2024. \nStep 3: Identify all the birds you see or hear within your planned time/location and use the best tool for sharing your bird sightings: \n\nIf you are a beginning bird admirer and new to bird identification\, try using the Merlin Bird ID app to tell us what birds you are seeing or hearing.\nIf you have participated in the count before and want to record numbers of birds\, try the eBird Mobile app or enter your bird list on the eBird website (desktop/laptop).\n\nIf you already contribute to Merlin or eBird\, continue what you are doing! All entries over the 4-days count towards GBBC.
