8th Annual GreenThumb Open Garden Day NYC

Join NYC Parks GreenThumb for the Annual Open Garden NYC on Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15 (rain or shine)! Hundreds of community gardens are opening their gates to the public for a weekend of free activities and exploration.

Our GreenThumb community gardens are volunteer-run green spaces where people can come together around growing food and community. Gardens across the city are seeking new members to plant produce and flowers, host events, maintain community spaces, and contribute extra hands for garden projects. Beginners and experienced gardeners are welcome! Open Garden NYC is a great way to meet the garden group members and explore your neighborhood community garden.

If your community garden would like to participate, please fill out the Event Request Approval Form and be sure to answer the Open Garden NYC question to register your event. Your group can participate for a few hours on a single day or both days. We are encouraging all garden groups who are planning to take part in Open Garden NYC to host a free special activity. Activities can include garden tours, arts and crafts, musical performances, volunteer projects, and much more.

Brooklyn Open Garden Day Events, Saturday, June 14, 2025 (updated 5/22/25)

8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Learn about Water Saving with Wood Chips at 400 Montauk Avenue Block Association, Brooklyn. Learn about a water saving method using wood chips. Learn how it works and participate in moving wood chips. Bring your own container to take wood chips home with you. All are welcome! Free!

10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. Open Garden Day with Plant Start Giveaway at Halsey, Ralph, & Howard Community Garden, Brooklyn. Come to Halsey Ralph & Howard Community Garden for a plant start giveaway for the community during Open Garden NYC! Free!

10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Open House at Brooklyn Bears/Rockwell Place Garden, Brooklyn. Come to Brooklyn Bears/Rockwell Place Garden during Open Garden NYC! Take a tour of the garden and learn how you can get involved! Free!

10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Plant Giveaway, Garden Tours, Bake Sale at Hollenback Community Garden, Brooklyn. Hollenback Community Garden will be participating in Open Garden NYC to share the beauty of the garden with our local community. The day will include plant giveaway, a bake sale, and more.

10:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Family Friendly Activities at Maple Street Community Garden, Brooklyn. Tour the garden, enjoy a food demo, and join for a book giveaway provided by Brooklyn Book Bodega and kids’ crafts/activities courtesy Wildlife Conservation Society/Prospect Park Zoo. Free!

11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Arts & Crafts in the Garden at Brooklyn’s Finest Garden, Brooklyn. Join us at Brooklyn’s Finest Garden for a day of arts & crafts and fun for the whole family! Free!

11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. Healthy Eating Talks & Discussion at Her-King Alagantic Community Garden, Brooklyn. Come to Her-King Alagantic Community Garden for talks and a discussion on healthy eating by speakers from the Mid-Bedford Heights Lions Club. Free!

11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Multilingual Welcome to Community Gardening in the East at Poppa & Momma Jones Historical Garden, Brooklyn. There will be Spanish, Bengali, and Mandarin-speaking garden members present. Visitors will be welcome to create and take hand-picked herb bundles and watch a composting demonstration. Free!

11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Open House at Sheffield Garden, Brooklyn. Open house at Sheffield Garden for the community and neighbors to explore and learn about the organic plants that are growing in the garden and how it affects our life. All are welcome! Free!

11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. Open House at Family Community Garden, Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Family Community Garden will be hosting an open house. We will show you what we are growing. Come one, come all! Free!

11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Open House at Prospect Farm, Brooklyn. Come join us at Prospect Farm for Open Garden NYC! We’ll be celebrating Pollinator Week and also doing our regular weekly farm activities – swing by! Free!

11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. Sunflower Seed Bomb Workshop at Newkirk Community Garden, Brooklyn. Learn how to make sunflower seed bombs in this fun workshop! All materials will be provided to make your own seed bombs to plant in tree pits and vacant areas to beautify our city. Free!

11:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m. Garden Clean-up and Planting Day at Her-King Alagantic Community Garden, Brooklyn. Come to Her-King Alagantic Community Garden and help clean-up and plant in the garden! Learn about healthy eating and how to get involved in the garden. Free!

12:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. Local Makers Celebration & Open House at Union St. Garden and Community Development, Brooklyn. Local vendors will be showcasing sustainably made products. The garden will also be open as part of Open Garden NYC, stop by and enjoy the garden! Free!

12:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m.  Open House at Hart To Hart Community Garden, Brooklyn. There will be baked goods for sale, free refreshments, garden tours and kids activities. Free!

12:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. Open House at Red Shed Garden, Brooklyn. Red Shed Community Garden will be hosting Open Garden Day on June 14th. Come by for fun activities, nature, and community! Free!

12:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m. Open House at Umoja Garden (Garden Beautiful), Brooklyn. Come to Umoja Garden during Open Garden NYC! Take a tour, learn about the garden, and find out how you can get involved! Free!

12:00 p.m.–2:00 p.m. Open House at Human Compass Garden, Brooklyn. Come enjoy the Human Compass Garden during Open Garden NYC! The garden will be open to the public to relax and enjoy a brief history of the community garden. All are welcome! Free!

12:00 p.m.–2:00 p.m. Solar Irrigation at Heaven’s Gate Community Garden, Brooklyn. Come to Heaven’s Gate Community Garden for a Solar Powered Irrigation System demonstration during Open Garden NYC! Free!

1:00 p.m.–2:00 p.m. Miguel”Kiki” Cotto performs Latin vocals w/guitar at Carmen Pabon Del Amanecer Jardin, Brooklyn. Carmen Pabon Del Amanecer hosts KikiCotto a locally grown muscian of LOISAIDA of PR heritage to entertain you with popular vocals accompanied by guitar. Free!

1:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m. Open House at Georgia Avenue Community Garden, Brooklyn. Come to Georgia Avenue Community Garden for an Open House to meet the garden group, learn about the garden, and find out how to get involved. Free!

2:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. Knit & Crochet with Kellie Pryor at Carmen Pabon Del Amanecer Jardin, Brooklyn. Learn to knit or crochet with Kellie! Some materials provided for free. Kellie is an excellent easygoing instructor who enjoys sharing her love of needle crafts. Free!
