Lakeshore Restoration Virtual Public Meeting

Thursday, February 16th, 2023 at 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Join Prospect Park Alliance for a Lakeshore Restoration Virtual Public Meeting to learn about the plans for this project, meet the design team and share feedback and insights as we embark on the design phase of this project.

Through the support of the community, the Speaker and Brooklyn Delegation of the New York City Council, led by the advocacy of Council Members Shahana Hanif, Crystal Hudson and Rita Joseph, allocated $2 million in funding in the current city budget, which was matched by a $1 million allocation by the Mayor, for the first phase of this $20 million project.

Prospect Park is home to Brooklyn’s only Lake, and this 60-acre treasure is a valuable resource for both Brooklyn community members and wildlife. Since its creation over 150 years ago, the Lake has aged over time and is in need of a restoration to improve its environmental resilience, particularly in the face of severe storms and record rainfall, which leads to flooding of the surrounding landscapes. In addition, this project will improve safety and accessibility to the Lakeshore for park visitors, and protect sensitive wildlife habitats. This project will be a continuation of the award-winning work that was accomplished as part of Lakeside, which restored the Lakeshore from the Concert Grove to the LeFrak Center. The project will also bring additional green space to this area of the park with the transformation of Wellhouse Drive from a vehicular drive to landscaped bike and pedestrian pathways.

Through this funding, Prospect Park Alliance will be creating a master plan for the Lakeshore and restoring a section of this landscape. The Alliance will be advocating for the remaining funding for this project from our local elected officials, and appreciate you continued advocacy and support in the coming months.
