Join NYC H2O for three walking tours to help identify Ridgewood Reservoir’s local vegetation and wildlife for CNC with iNaturalist!
The City Nature Challenge is an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April, where cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see not only what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal, but also which city can gather the most observations of nature, find the most species, and engage the most people in the event. In order to put Highland Park and Ridgewood Reservoir on the map, NYC H2O is providing three naturalists to lead species focused identification walks during the Apr 28 – May 1 collection window.
1. Bird ID Walk 8AM – 9:30AM with Heather Wolf- author and ornithologist, web developer of Ebird at Cornell
2. Plant ID Walk 10AM – 11:30AM with Jocelyn Perez-Blanco conservationist and Herbalists Without Borders (HWB) NYC Queens Chapter Coordinator.
3. Tree ID 12PM – 1:30PM with Kevin Barrett, PhD botanist and NYC’s research program developer and GIS educator
Attendees will need to download iNaturalist to participate in the identification and phototaking process during these walks. There will be an iNaturalist support team member on site throughout each section as well as other H2O staff present to assist.
Members of the community are also invited to participate outside of these group events on an individual level during the April 28 – May 1st collection period. Please see the virtual event description for details: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2023-ridgewood-reservoir
