Bright Idea! A Community Design Summit

Saturday, October 23rd, 2021 at 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM

You came, you saw, you zoomed. Now we invite you to play “citizen planner” during our day-long virtual Design Summit (10/23) where we open the floor to any student, resident, or business owner who has a bright idea for the future of public space.

ABOUT THE DESIGN SUMMIT:

The Design Summit is a culmination of a year’s worth of dialogue and idea sharing around the creation and stewardship of the public realm. Where on Saturday, October 23rd North Brooklyn Parks Alliance invites the community to play city planner and present their brightest ideas for the future of their public spaces.

Through the worst of the pandemic and on the verge of new political leadership, we are all hoping for more inter-agency, intergenerational, intersectional pollination of thought in the planning and maintenance of our built environments — particularly here in North Brooklyn where we face a bevy of serious challenges we touched upon in our panel conversations.

At the onset of the series we encouraged the public to organize around themes and theories that excited them. To push forward — or even against — what was presented, we’re asking our community to present their own ideas, keeping in mind that there are multiple pathways to a sustainable, equitable, stable future.

Whether our “citizen planners” were inspired to redesign the neighborhood’s street grid or just the garbage on their block, we asked that they consider their submission holistically. Touching on the benefits and the possible pitfalls. Can they design a neighborhood with less friction and more function on a balanced green budget?

Guess we will find out this fall at the Bright Idea! Community Design Summit.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SUMMIT:

The summit is open to North Brooklyn students, residents or business owners that are 16 years old or older who have attended at least one panel discussion during the 2020 or 2021 program season.

We envision a full day of presentations via zoom. Broken up into a morning, afternoon, and evening session, there will be a keynote speaker to kick off the event and a moderator to lead each session.

Presenters can be individuals or self organized teams or trained or untrained persons. Submissions are not juried, although space is limited to twenty – twenty minute presentations. Designs should focus on the public realm.

A Summit Reader will be made available in July. An info session will be scheduled in early August to answer any technical or presentation questions.

Sign-up to participate will open in early September

We encourage everyone to submit
