You have probably read about the Brooklyn Bike Rave and wondered what was the meaning behind it. About one month ago on July 22, 2017, hundreds of cyclists rode along 7 miles of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. Starting in Greenpoint, the group rode through Williamsburg, traveled inside the Brooklyn Navy Yard, rode through DUMBO and Brooklyn Bridge Park, and finally looped back to finish under the iconic Archway under the Manhattan Bridge in DUMBO. But the cyclists weren’t riding the dark, they were lit up by colorful lights, flashy outfits, and glow sticks. You’re probably asking yourself, “What does this have to do with being green?”

The Bike Rave is an annual event hosted by Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI), whose Co-Founder Brian McCormick can easily be considered an eco-hero of Brooklyn. More than bright lights and colors, the Bike Rave calls attention to raise visibility about the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative. The attendees of this event become connected with the urban areas that they are biking (and partying!) through with a revolutionary sense of expression. Not only are people participating in the ride itself, but there are many people standing by to cheer on and join in the fun.

While the Bike Rave is a beautiful site to see, hear, and experience, it is also a great time of learning and exposure. Taking place over 7 miles of Brooklyn’s waterfront and industrial parks from Greenpoint to the Brooklyn Bridge, this event calls attention to communities coming together, enjoying and utilizing our neighborhoods.

The Brooklyn Greenway Initiative began over a decade ago in the hopes of developing, establishing, and creating long-term stewardship for the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. In the beginning, BGI worked with Regional Plan Association (RPA) to then create workshops with NYC DOT and implement a plan for the Greenway which became open to the public in June of 2012.

Since then, BGI has fostered an amazing space for our community to truly feel and utilize one of Brooklyn’s precious open spaces. With over 23 NYC DOT capital projects spanning over 14 miles from Greenpoint to Bay Ridge, BGI has quite literally bridged gaps. There are many ongoing projects, initiatives, and events that keep the Greenway relevant and active. From working on creating more green spaces surrounding the Greenway to stormwater infrastructure development, BGI makes sure we have a safe and clean place to cycle.

NYC is notorious for its biking accidents and infrastructure issues, which makes BGI all the more important. From memberships to corporate volunteer opportunities, and adopt-a-Greenway projects, BGI makes a large impact on Brooklyn’s safe recreational spaces. An amazing organization with exciting events, Brooklyn Greenway Initiative and the Bike Rave continue to improve our communities.
