Shorebird Walk at Canarsie Beach

Saturday, May 13th, 2023 at 8:00 AM - 9:30 AM

Free

Join NYC H2O and educator Sophie Barno for bird watching at the Canarsie Beach before our 5/13 Canarsie Park Cleanup!

Shorebird migration is a wildly unique event that can be observed right here in NYC!

Some shorebirds and gulls stay here for the winter and breed in other parts of the world (Sanderlings, Killdeer, Herring Gulls, and Ring-billed Gulls). Other birds breed in and around coastal NYC, and spend their summers or winters in other parts of the world (Willets, Spotted Sandpipers).

New York City is what is known as a stopover site for many shorebirds. This means that along the thousands and thousands of miles that birds migrate each year, they land and refuel in our city! Species such as Semipalmated Sandpipers, Ruddy Turnstones, and the Red Knot can spend months to just days perusing the beaches and mudflats of NYC.

Most species of shorebirds have been experiencing population declines over the past several decades due to human-caused factors such as habitat loss and over-exploitation of natural resources that these birds need to survive. Learning about the different habits of these birds is an important step to promote conservation of these species.

Come learn some cool facts and see these birds in action with us! This walk is open for any and all types of birdwatchers. Whether you have lots of experience or this is your first time out, feel free to come and experience the joys of Canarsie birding.
