Sustainable Sewing: Darning Clothing and Textiles (Greenpoint Library)

Thursday, May 11th, 2023 at 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Free

Join us for this 2-hour hands-on workshop, attendees will learn how to repair textiles using darning — a mending technique for fixing damaged knits and wovens.

Specifically, this workshop will include:

  • Brief history of mending and mending techniques
  • Discussion of the environmental impact and importance of repair
  • Overview of darning tools and picking the perfect yarn and needle
  • Step-by-step darning demonstration and darn-a-long
  • Lots of time to ask questions and get 1-on-1 help

Attendees should bring an item to work on in the workshop—we recommend looking for small holes or very worn/thin areas in socks, sweaters, hats, and wool shirts or flannels. We don’t recommend jeans, t-shirts, or garments made of delicate fabrics.

The library will provide some yarns and needles to choose from, but please feel free to bring your own materials to suit your preferences. Find recommendations here.

This workshop is led by Repair Shop, a Brooklyn-based duo developing learning experiences and research around maintenance, craft, and design.

Registration will open on April 27 2023 9:00 am.
