In honor of National Poetry Month in April, the Fort Greene Park Conservancy invites you to join us for an afternoon to celebrate poetry. Notable poets such as Walt Whitman, Marianne Moore, Denise Bell, and Richard Wright all drew inspiration from Fort Greene Park. The deep connection the park has to poetry & writing speaks for itself. Walt Whitman was instrumental in the founding of the park, Marianne Moore wrote a lot of her nature poetry in the park inspired by the flora around her, Denise Bell was an established poet in Fort Greene who wrote about disenfranchisement, Richard Wright wrote his novel sitting in the park and the list goes on. Join us as we build bridges to connect the next generation of poets in Fort Greene Park.
Poetry in the Park will open at 12:00 PM. Najee Omar, MC and Workshop Leader, will welcome our featured poets: Alisha Acquaye, Ashna Ali, and Kim Brandon as they kick off festivities with poetry readings. We welcome all literary lovers an opportunity to create Blackout Poetry and explore poetry with the Walt Whitman Library.
We offer a supportive and welcoming environment for anyone interested in writing in Fort Greene Park in the company of fellow literature lovers. We will conclude the afternoon with an open mic from 2:00 – 2:50 PM. Writers will have the opportunity to share some of their work at the open mic to if they are inspired to do so.
