BKCM Juneteenth Celebration (Brower Park)

Join the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music for an afternoon of music and culture commemorating Juneteenth at the Shirley Chisholm Circle in Brower Park. This year’s event, which also falls on Fathers Day, will celebrate Black fathers. This event is free to attend.

This celebration is a partnership between the Friends of Brower Park, Brooklyn Public Library, Brooklyn Children’s Museum and Brooklyn Conservatory of Music.

Juneteenth: Juneteenth commemorates the June 19, 1865 emancipation of all who had been enslaved in the United States (the last being those in Texas), nearly three years after President Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth Celebration Schedule

11am – A performance by Brooklyn United Marching Band

11:30am – A reading from “What is Juneteenth?”

12:00pm – A performance by music students from Noel Pointer

2:00pm – A Performance by Acclaimed Ghanaian percussionist Amos Gabia

2:30 – 4pm – A Performance by father-son DJ duos and a violinist
Featuring DJ Sylk and his son WavyKid, Mr. Walt and his son DJ Rell and violinist Classique
Presented by Brooklyn Conservatory of Music

From 12-4pm, BKCM will also be hosting a craft table for kids.

BKCM Performers

DJ Sylk is from Hollis Queens NY and has worked hard throughout his years of playing on college radio and clubs. He shared the stage with Hip-Hop legends such as Roxanne Shante, EPMD, Doug E Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, DJ Kool, Chubb Rock, Mr. Cheeks of the Lost Boyz, and many more. Every Monday to Friday you can hear DJ Sylk on LL Cool J’s Rock The Bells Radio on SiriusXM Channel 43, from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. (EST)

DJ Sylk will be joined by his son, WavyKid.

Mr. Walt started out very early in the music industry working at the legendary record store, the Music Factory in Jamaica, Queens.  Working at Music Factory allowed him to make numerous connections and forge strong, relationships with artists, DJs and other people in the music industry.  While working there he continued making beats in the studio for his production company, Da Beatminerz, (with his brother, DJ Evil Dee) he has been a part of creating some classic hip-hop music.  The list of artist that Da Beatminerz have worked with are too long to mention, including multi-platinum selling soul singer, D’Angelo, the iconic rap groups, Naughty by Nature and M.O.P.  A visionary he is one of the founders of Beatminerz Radio.

Mr. Walt will be joined by his son, DJ Rell.

DJ Rell: It’s a very cliché thing to say DJ Rell is the future. Born in Brooklyn New York and raised in Queens, DJ Rell thrives off his musical parents, pioneering radio personality Lil Nat and legendary DJ/Producer Mr. Walt of the Beatminerz. A recent University of Hartford graduate, he has already made a name for himself on the college party scene. Influenced and coached by some of the legends in the game DJ Evil Dee, Kool Dj Red Alert, Ralph Mcdaniels and more, DJ Rell is on his way and represents a new generation of DJ’s influenced and inspired by the old school but in tune with the music of today.

Adebisi “Classique” Labinjo was inspired in early childhood by “Showtime at the Apollo” and “Star Search.” She taught herself to play violin and viola in grade school and achieved her dream of winning on “Showtime at the Apollo” three times by age 13. She is a songwriter as well as a singer. She has performed with fellow artists throughout the Tri-State Area, has shared the stage or opened for artists such as Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters, and Gym Class Heroes, and been featured in numerous music industry events like Bamboozle Festival in Asbury, New Jersey, and All-Star Music Award Show. She mentors youth and, as a well-rounded musician and creative artist, says of herself, “I’m not a sound, I’m an artist. @Classique516

Amos Kwaku Gabia is a professional musician from Ghana, West Africa. He made New York his home in 2013. At an early age, Gabia was introduced to music and started performing with the Noko Yedzen group. He plays a variety of instruments including the djembe, dun dun, kpanlogo, flute, and asalato. Gabia is a founding member of Saha and performed with the award winning Salaka Ensemble. While living in Ghana, he led programs for groups of travelers from around the world interested in learning about West African culture through its music and dance. Through the power of his drumming and the passion he has for music, Gabia makes audiences and students fall in love with music from his homeland. Since arriving in New York, Gabia teaches percussion students of all levels and ages through the Third Street Music School, Brooklyn Conservatory of Music and in a variety of other educational institutions. He performs regularly throughout the Tri-State Area.
