Sunday, October 4, 2026, 10 AM-1 PM: Bike Tour: Fossil Fuel History of Newtown Creek. Location: Manhattan Avenue Street End Park. Join NCA and Sane Energy Project for a 5-mile bike tour showcasing the past and present of energy infrastructure on Newtown Creek! This 5-mile bike tour will explore the past, present, and future of fossil fuel infrastructure along Newtown Creek. From the establishment of the world’s first kerosene refinery in 1854, to the ongoing cleanup of the country’s largest terrestrial oil spill, to the current environmental justice impacts stemming from National Grid’s 117 acre Liquified Natural Gas facility – Newtown Creek has a long and troubled history with fossil fuel production, storage, and pollution. We will see many of the historic and current operations along the Creek, learn more about the hazards they present, and discuss paths towards a cleaner energy future. Join Newtown Creek Alliance as we explore the network of trucks, trains, and barges that keep industry afloat in Newtown Creek.This 6-mile bike tour will explore the vast network of transportation and logistics infrastructure that circulates goods and materials through and around Newtown Creek. We’ll take advantage of calmer Sunday traffic to traverse truck routes through industrial Maspeth, with stopping points to talk about maritime infrastructure, railroad crossings, and the “last-mile” megawarehouses popping up around the Creek.Details and registration via Eventbrite.
